May 14th Is Bloggers Without Makeup Day: Will You Take It All Off?

Woman Putting on Lip Gloss

Leave it to the Today Show to copy the bloggers. Tomorrow, May 14th, is Mummy Mayhem's Bloggers without Makeup day, but separate from this online event, Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb broadcast the Today Show make-up free in response to Rosie O'Donnell's flip accusations that Kathie Lee had work done on her face. The two women challenged O'Donnell to a no makeup duel and O'Donnell agreed, joining the broadcast via Skype.

It's interesting how Gifford and Kotb refer to their makeup as "protection" and putting their "game face on" because that's precisely the wall that Mummy Mayhem proposes that bloggers should tear down with her Bloggers without Makeup movement.

Her idea was born after she realized that while she was presenting her honest self within her writing, her picture didn't reflect how she looked the majority of the time. She asked why we all choose the most flattering pictures and then additionally photoshop them in order to skew our visual representation all the while letting all of our faults flow via our words.

She took an honest picture of herself, sans makeup, and posted it on her blog, encouraging others to change their Twitter profile for the day or post a picture of themselves on their blog.

This Friday, 14 May, I am going to proclaim it "Bloggers Without Makeup Day", but open to bloggers and tweeps. I'm going to use the above photo on my Twitter account ALL DAY on Friday. I'm going to put a trending topic attached to it, #BloggersWithoutMakeup, and I'm going to show all of you the real me and, in turn, perhaps practice a bit of what I preach. If you have a blog, you could also post a pic like mine on your blog (if you dare) and tweet it on Friday. I'm not going to quit the more glam shots all together. I just figured, why should we be afraid to show our true selves?

Mummy Mayhem is collecting others who are jumping on-board with a linky feature so people can peruse all of the "naked" bloggers. Ever wonder what Wanderlust looks like sans makeup? What about Polka Dot Rabbit or Tina Grey? Now you can see a face that unabashedly says, "this is me" to match the writing.

Why are smart, sassy women -- such as Gifford and Kotb and numerous bloggers -- so frightened to show what they look like without makeup? When did we become comfortable telling people about a yeast infection or our marital issues, but draw the line at letting them see us without mascara? And even if you don't put on a full face of makeup every morning, be honest--did you choose a profile picture that accurately reflects how you look on a normal day or did you scroll through all the pictures on your computer, debating which one played up your good points?

Though I've been known to pick out nicer clothes when I'm having someone over whom I don't know well, when my friends are stopping by, they get jeans and a t-shirt. Certainly, people stopping by my blog verbally get jeans and t-shirt Mel who intimately admits to feeling blue or talks about her mammogram. Shouldn't they also visually see jeans and t-shirt Mel when I post a picture?

Do you let honest pictures of yourself go up on your blog or are you guilty of glamming it up while writing about your foibles?

I never wear make up. I have a tube of lipstick, and some mascara, which i use when I have an event to go to.

Back in my teen years, I had horrid acne, and my dermatologist told me not to wear it, so I never have.

I had to go back on your blog and make sure it was still up before I gave you credit, but you're also a brave one who posts your Conan hair :-) I am going to learn a thing or two from you.

Musings from Me
Finally a day I can stand behind! I have not worn makeup since the early 90s. Very freeing. I won't wear makeup ever again as I dislike the feeling of it on my face.

May 13, 2010 - 8:37pm

I'm makeup free most of the time, BUT I do look for the best picture of myself before uploading it online. And I'll ask my husband to retake a shot if I don't like how I look. Must go find a few of those outtakes to put up.

Bloggers Without Makeup

May 13, 2010 - 8:24pm

Thanks Melissa. I'm so happy that so many are taking on this initiative. It seems to have liberated many women from the trappings of feeling as though they constantly need to look good and/or prove something.

To be honest, before I posted my piece, I hesitated to push the PUBLISH button. I wondered if people would think the idea silly? Would they feel pressured to 'expose' their true selves?

Seems that there are many who have long felt the same way, and are glad for the opportunity to "take it all off".

I feel so much joy in seeing others so happy about being able to be themselves.

Thanks for your wonderful thoughts and comments on this.

I love the point you made

May 13, 2010 - 8:38pm

I love the point you made about how naked we are with our words, how you're presenting your real self through your writing. If we can do it in one place, we should be able to do it in others.

No makeup for me!

May 13, 2010 - 8:27pm

Hi,
I rarely wear makeup except for special occasions, for two reasons primarily: 1) my eyes are too sensitive and I'd just be rubbing off my eyeliner as soon as I put it on and 2) I'm too lazy and can't be bothered with having to constantly re-apply lip gloss or lipstick (plus the taste of lipstick is annoying to me). I've never worn foundation and I only wash my face with a washcloth each day. Don't believe in blocking my pores. So, there you have it! My Blogher profile photo and my Twitter profile photo and my blog *(http://ivysppdblog.wordpress.com) avatar are proof.

Blogging in the buff

May 13, 2010 - 8:43pm

I loved the idea of showing our real faces to the world and apparently, based on the enthusiastic response, so did almost all the other women who read about it.

We all long to take off our social "masks" and be seen for who we are. Blogging offers us a venue to speak our truths, to write honestly and without censure, and showing our "real" faces on our blogs is another step in that direction.

Kudos to Jodie for having the courage and creativity to start this movement. Let's hear it for blogging in the buff!

May 13, 2010 - 10:34pm

I wore makeup for my profile pics, but I rarely wear it any other time. I'm not trying to make any personal statement by not wearing makeup, for me it's more about being totally lazy. I hate the time it takes to put it on, and I hate the time it takes to take it off.

In fact, I recently wrote a post that included two pics of me and my kids, and I'm not wearing any makeup in either picture.

I'll go out on a limb here and say NO.

May 14, 2010 - 4:40am

While I don't wear very much makeup (geez, just look at my picture!) I do wear some. Frankly, it makes me feel polished and put-together and yeah, it's nice to have actual eyelashes. And since I have an actual office job to go to today, I think I'll be leaving the Kathie Lee solidarity to you all and supporting you from behind a little bit of blush and a swipe of mascara.

Let's just say I'll be wearing no makeup on the inside.

May 14, 2010 - 6:58am

Well, kind of. I will wear no make up out and about today. But tonight I have to don stage makeup, of all makeups, as it is opening night for our Spring show. So I'll be wearing the MOST MAKEUP I wear all year. I have failed Blogger No Makeup Day

don't wear makeup daily

May 14, 2010 - 7:07am

I only wear makeup for special occasions or church nowadays. I do like the special feeling I get from looking my best, just like when I wear a nice dress or outfit.

I get up for work at 3am. I work from home in work jammies so I don't have a reason to put make up on.

Most of my photos I am not wearing makeup. The picture in my profile is from a wedding so I do have some on there. I don't wear much even when I put it on.
