Media mogul Russell Simmons contemplates meditation as a life changer

At 56, Def Jam Records and Phat Farm founder Russell Simmons is known for championing hip-hop. And with about $300 million dollars in the bank, he might be visualizing ways to splurge. Instead, however, Simmons is sharing his success in practicing meditation for 15 years with a new book: "Success Through Stillness: Meditation Made Simple" (click for details).
“I’m finding that in this new ‘internet age,’ I have more jobs and hustle then ever,” Simmons said in an interview with Well & Good about the role that transcendental meditation has played in his career success. “Meditation has allowed me to focus and figure out the best places for me to apply my energy. Otherwise, I’d end up just chasing my own tail.”
The principles and practices in Simmons' new book build on his previous guide: "Do You!: 12 Laws to Access the Power in You to Achieve Happiness and Success."
And he notes: "“Before, I’d worry if an album was going to flop, or if a clothing line was going to sell. Now I’m comfortable committing myself to work only and forgetting about the results. It’s a much more effective way to live.”
And if anxiety or fear of change keeps you stuck in a rut, Simmons says meditation can help. “You’re never stuck in anything unless you say you are."
Favorite quotes: "When you finally put down all the judgement you’ve been carrying around with you, instead of focusing on people’s perceived weaknesses, you’ll start seeing all the good they’re bringing to the table,” he says.
“Meditation is going to let you accomplish twice as much while only putting in half the effort.”
