Upon meeting Monique Moore, the very first thing that struck was me her flawless, dewy face, like something you’d see splashed across the pages of Seventeen Magazine with a tag line like “love the skin you’re in” penned beneath it.
I soon learned that this beautiful skin wasn’t just a result of her French genetics, but rather a result of not over exposing herself to the sun’s powerful rays. In fact, it was Monique’s passion to preserve her body’s largest organ, coupled with the alarming 800% rise in melanoma amongst women aged 18-39 in the past forty years, that inspired her to co-create Mott 50 - a fashion forward, clothing line designed to protect you from UVA and UVB light.
Monique admits to her affection for the fiery orb that gives us all life and recognizes that vitamin D is essential for optimum health and cognitive function; however, over exposure to UVA light (from which our regular clothes don’t protect us) leads to cancer, sun spots and wrinkles. It’s no secret that Father Time stops for nobody, but with proper sun protection, we don’t need to look like we’re on board with his imminent plan.
Although there are other UV protective lines on the market, Mott 50 has emerged as one of the most coveted brands because of the unique synergy between the natural fibers of the fabric, the tightness of the weave, and the chemical free chic designs. Endorsed by The Skin Cancer Foundation, Mott 50 has successfully created soft, lightweight pieces that are easily assimilated into your everyday wardrobe so you don’t feel like you need to dress like this guy.
Monique confesses that Mott (the street name of her NYC apartment where she and co-founder Anne Botica Reilly spent long nights researching fabrics, compiling designs and developing strategies) 50 (the level of certified international lab-tested UV protection) has challenged her to stretch in ways she never imagined, with the biggest challenge being maintaining the balance between striving to expand her business and pausing to enjoying her success. Monique has taken her passion for beautiful skin and has turned it into a thriving enterprise, while partnering with the Melanoma Research Alliance and Stand UP to Cancer in the effort to end skin cancer. Now that’s WoW!

Ordinary Magic: If you were at a cocktail party and were asked to explain what you do in three sentences or less, what would you say?
MM:I’m the co-founder of Mott 50, a line of fashionable sun protective clothing. My role is all encompassing – design,
production, branding, marketing, sales, business analysis and development. No day is ever alike.
Ordinary Magic: What inspired you to head in that direction?
MM: Did you know that regular clothing lets in UVA (aging & skin cancer causing) rays? There was a time when I didn’t either. I’d always been obsessed with my skin and warding off pre-mature aging and seen too many people affected by skin cancer. The need for more fashionable UV protective clothing inspired Mott 50 – a smart clothing line for women age of all ages. We offer soft, easy-to-wear designs with the added value of 50 UPF (ultraviolet protection factor).
Ordinary Magic: What is your accomplishment that you are most proud of to date?
MM: I’m proud to have launched my own business. It’s proven to be a lot of hard work. But seeing people benefit from our designs is such an accomplishment!
Ordinary Magic: What has the biggest turning point been in your life so far?
MM: Honestly, each day feels like a mini turning point. I’m constantly evolving and developing. Life is definitely a journey.
Ordinary Magic: What is your greatest passion?
MM: I’m passionate about living! I love to travel, see independent films, go to concerts, practice yoga, eat good food, help people, read, explore, decorate, entertain, be creative, challenge myself. That said, my biggest passion is without a doubt my family and loved ones. Those relationships are priceless to me.
Ordinary Magic: What words of wisdom would you give your twenty-year old self?
MM: You’re right where you should be right now. Laugh and keep living life to the fullest!
Ordinary Magic: What was the last book you read?
MM: When Nietzsche Wept by Irvin D. Yalom And I always have a stack of 10 magazines … I love them.
Ordinary Magic: What is your personal philosophy?
MM: I don’t have it all figured out. But what I do know … Life is 90% attitude. You can’t have it all, so enjoy what you have. I’m happiest when I’m balanced and true to myself. I don’t take myself too seriously and still believe in the Golden Rule: “do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”
Ordinary Magic: What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
MM: You don’t take material things with you.
Ordinary Magic: If you could be anywhere in the world right now doing anything, what would it be?
MM: This is my favorite game! Some days I crave to explore the markets of Morocco and then dance the night away. Or ski the Alps followed by french fries, escargot and red wine with close friends. I’m also dying to go to Israel and to hike Machu Picchu. And I love a road trip, anywhere. I’m all over the map ☺
Ordinary Magic: What do you have gratitude for in this moment?
MM: So much! I’m currently en route to Deer Valley for a wedding so I’m feeling grateful for my wonderful friends, health, the mountains, and a day off.
Ordinary Magic: Do you have a Life Motto?
MM: Smile and the whole world smiles with you. Kindness is contagious.
