Meetups; Karen Geurtsen, the fiction of the nation state and savvy, tacky media stars.

One of the benefits of living in lots of countries is meeting lots of interesting people. They become more accessible the more you move or maybe its just me. The other day I met Karen Geurtsen, a writer for HP/Tijd; a Dutch weekly mag that lives somewhere in the political middle.

She's really cool and gained some notoriety by effortlessly infiltrating Geert Wilders' controversial ant-Islam and populist party. We didn't discuss it much; she experienced enough discomfort and maybe she wished she could have dug deeper. Who knows but after having done my own investigative research on the man he certainly doesn't appear all that benign.

And yes, like Palin's branch of populist rhetoric, there's definitely remnants of the tea party within Gilders party. And gosh, don't these savvy, tacky media stars just love Israel; Palin keeps the flag in her office, Gilders lived there and has traveled to Israel 40 times in the past 25 years. I marvel at the amount of money that accompanies their love for zionism and hatred towards Islam.

No surprise the peroxide man child Geert Wilders is completely media driven. Just reading his wiki page, if only half is true; he's so excessively anti-Islam; there's a reason his trial continues. Of course, with all the death threats thrown his way, he can conveniently embrace that 'under seige' mentality. He's achieved his goals; the media antics and race baiting have subsided somewhat and he's going main stream.

Such quiet and slightly disturbing trends to track; Le Pen in France is gaining speed, Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban is stirring it up re human rights; just reading an article in New Review of Books shows that I'm not alone. As with Geert Wilders, these guys get an awful lot of money and support from the US and Israeli neocons; how much longer we can keep the fiction of the nation state alive is a mystery to me.

I'm not sure how many Dutch people caught it but recently I just happened to catch the BBC documentary, Europe's most Dangerous Man. Not only does it show how intellectually lazy and slightly crazy this guy is, with that ridiculous head of hair, it simply highlights that fact this guy is anything but benign.
