Phoning It In

Saturday morning is soccer practice. While the daughter is out on the field, I walk/run the track above, but tomorrow, I could join the other parents in the stand because as of tonight I have a smart phone too.Every Saturday, they sit with bums glued to hard plastic chairs and thumbs and eyes glued to their phones. A few have commented on my taking time to exercise instead of watch my daughter practice, but if I did sit with the other parents, I'd have been the only one watching the practice.  Read more >

Nothing's official until the votes are tallied and sorted for fraud, but as it stands for tonight, I came in 5th in a blog off of moms who blog in Canada. The first week, I just wanted to hide and pretend I'd never been nominated. Votes roll in and rankings begin to take shape. It's like being weighed, measured and found just a bit fatter than you thought you were on The Biggest Loser. I tried to ignore it but my inner Catholic schoolgirl is drawn to competition like a toddler with a permanent marker is to a clean bare wall.  Read more >

If You Could Only Have One, Movies or Music?

We gave up XM over the summer. The content never justified its expense, so it lost its place in the family budget. As a result, I had to get chummy with the local FM options and to my surprise; Edmonton's radio stations don't entirely suck.My favorite station by far is 102.3 aka Now Radio. The on air personalities seldom make my ears bleed and one of their morning guys would be worth an admission price, but luckily he's free.  Read more >

When the Neighbors Smoke Pot

My younger brother lives in Marin County in California. It's not the best of neighborhoods, but he and his wife do the best they can to see to it that their two girls have what they need. She works for the county, and he is a maintenance worker at the apartment complex where they live. In addition to his own children, my brother took in our 17-year-old nephew recently. That's another long story, but the short of it is that his parents haven't really their job, and so my brother stepped up and took over.  Read more >

I live in Alberta, Canada. Moved here when I met a guy on the Internet and we decided that LDR's where international borders are concerned just don't work. I write. Blog periodically at Care2 but mostly on my own. Someday, I am going to write a book, but in the meantime - and when I am not writing - I wife, mother, household and teach yoga. It's not as granola/Carole Brady an existence as it sounds, but it's a whole lot better than the single mom full time high school teacher gig I had previously.
