Songs of sympathy -1

Here's a song I wrote for highly respected medical doctor and human rights activist, Dr Binayak Sen, who has been imprisoned by the state of Chhattisgarh (India) for sedition or waging war against the state, and of being a 'sympathiser' of the naxals (radical left, armed groups in India). I wrote it out of a sense of outrage and helplessness, but also as part of an attempt to understand what exactly we mean when we make a crime out of 'sympathy' - sympathy for whom, drawing upon what, resulting in what, for whom? In the wake of the Wounded Woman

When I was a little girl, I equated rape with death. The movies (and bad pulp fiction and even comics) were to blame, of course. I did not know yet that men - and children - got raped too and I was too young to know what rape meant, yet I was convinced that if a woman was raped, either she got killed, or she had to kill herself. About Me: 

Annie Zaidi writes poetry, fiction, non-fiction, drama, blog posts, reports, reviews and (in a dark, distant past) recipes she never actually tried.

Her first collection of poems, Crush, was published in 2007 (Jaico, India). Her poetry has also appeared in First Proof: 2 (Penguin, India), Pratilipi and Indian Literature (Sahitya Akademi, India).  Her fiction has been anthologized in 21 Under 40, a collection of short stories by women (Zubaan, India), Verve magazine and in a forthcoming edition of Atlas. An essay is included in India, a collection of contemporary Indian writing (ISBN, Italy). She also writes drama and was one among three shortlisted for The Hindu Playwright award, 2009. Over the last nine years, she has written for several newspapers and magazines including Frontline, Tehelka, Mid-day. She currently lives in Bombay and blogs at Known Turf
