Cassie Johnston

By day, Cassie Johnston is a graphic designer, but after hours, Cassie is obsessed with all things health and wellness.  After gaining the Freshman 50 in college, Cassie had a lightbulb moment at a doctor’s appointment and left the office ready to change her life. Fifty pounds later, a new-found passion for the healthy living was born. This love of all things health and wellness, lead to a second career in food, fitness and motivational writing.

She currently splits her freetime between blogging, recipe development and photography. Her recipes and articles have appeared on websites for major brands and in the pages of glossy food magazines. She blogs daily about her daily fitness and food adventures (and misadventures) at Back to Her Roots.

Cassie lives in Southern Indiana with her husband, Craig, plus their two fur-children, a terrier mix named Rory and a fuzzy gray kitten named Sookie. She’s a big fan of strenuous hikes, bacon, sports, trashy TV and good local beer. She tried her hand at long distance running—completing her first, and probably last, half marathon in 2011—but outdoor adventuring is what really gets her juices flowing. On the top of Cassie’s fitness bucket list? Hiking the Grand Canyon from rim-to-rim.

Slim Pickins Lentil Veggie Soup

I’m usually pretty good about menu planning, which means that we almost always have something yummy on the docket for dinner throughout the week. And usually, before we run really low on groceries, I make another menu and head out to the store. But every now and again, life gets in the way (for all of us, right?), and I don’t end up getting to the store before our menu is “out” ....more

Our Grocery Budget is $800 (and Why We’re Okay With It)

For years, I’ve been trying to squeeze dollars and cents out of our grocery budget. I’ve seen all the super saver blogs out there where dedicated couponers feed their families of six for $200 a month (and a lot of them even do it with relatively healthy foods). For the longest time, I beat myself up about not being able to hit a lower total at the end of the month ....more

How to Plan a Garden

As I type this, I am sitting outside on our deck, basking in the sun of a 75° degree day—Spring has officially sprung, my friends! And as soon as the buds start showing on the trees (well, actually quite a bit earlier than that), I start getting the gardening bug. There is something about all this rampant sunshine that makes me just itch to get outside and get my hands in the soil ....more

Strawberry, Lime, Cucumber and Mint Water

There is something about warmer weather that makes me want to drink all the flavored beverages ever. Somehow, it seems like plain ole water just doesn’t do the trick when it’s 75 degrees like it did when it was blizzarding back in January. If I’m being totally honest, what I really want is a really cold gin and tonic, heavy on the lime, that I sip on while swinging on our front porch swing as the sun goes down, but I’ll have to wait for that kind of beverage until June ....more

Things I’m Digging…

California Roll Amaranth Salad

Creativity is an interesting thing. It can be easy to assume that there is a limited amount of creativity that each person has (that’s why you hear lots of folks saying, “I’m not a creative person!”), but as someone who works everyday in multiple creative fields, I can tell you that isn’t true at all. Creativity isn’t goo in a bucket, and when you’ve used up that goo, your bucket is empty ....more

Homemade Citrus Hand Sanitizer

There are a lot of things in this world that scare me. I’m terrified of tornadoes (I think I have a right to be after going through two in one year). I’m petrified of small spaces ....more

Daily Command Center Printable

I’ve been struggling with planners my entire life. I think part of it is due to my mixture of left- and right-brainedness. Part of me is so left-brained that I crave the structure and ability to put my life into neat, little boxes that come with planners ....more

10 Goals for April

I really want to get back in the habit of writing out my goals each month. I’ve been slacking with goal-setting lately, and while I know it’s not for everyone, setting goals on a regular basis really helps keep me on track with my long-term plans. Often, it’s tempting for me to just to kinda willy-nilly follow a path that I think will get me where I want to go, but it just never works well for me ....more

Wellness Calendar: April 2014 (free printable)

Phew. March just flew by for me! I think last month, I said I hoped that we’d have lots of nice Spring weather by the time I posted April’s calendar, and I think we’re finally getting there! ...more
