To The Girl Who Will Break my Son's Heart

I wish you could see him as a four-year-old boy on the playground last week. Maybe you would change your mind. He was playing with a couple of new school friends, a boy and girl. They discovered a broken tree covered in colourful ribbons. It was lying on the ground across from the sandbox right by the school fence. They were fully engaged in the game, tying and untying the ribbons, treating what they were doing with the seriousness children reserve only for games. ...more

Being a "Girl" in the Dojo: Sexism in Karate

I remember the first woman I saw in the dojo. She was a green belt, I think -- and I was still in sweats and a T-shirt (hadn't even gotten my karate uniform yet). Back then, I was so busy trying to figure out these hand, foot and body movements that I didn't realize I was one of only two adult females in a class of 30 people....more

"My Workout Landed Me in the Hospital with Rhabdo"

Over the last few weeks, I keep seeing CrossFit pop up on social media. News stations are warning of its dangers. CrossFit lovers are lashing out at those who get hurt doing CrossFit and blame the workout. As someone who has never seen CrossFit in action or participated in a workout, it's hard to know what to believe, though I have to admit that hearing that the logo requested by CrossFit's creator is a vomiting clown named Uncle Pukie, it doesn't sound like something this runner and yoga practitioner would enjoy.  I'm not looking to push my body until I vomit when I exercise. ...more

Sleep Is Highly Overrated Anyway

Bellonheels.com Why in the world do women keep so many secrets from other women? We are supposed to be a sisterhood. None of you told me what would become of my bladder after childbirth. No one told me that almost the exact day that you turn 40, your once supple face, begins to exhibit a slight sag.  No one told me how hard it would be to maintain my weight after 40. AND no one prepared me for how hard it would be to sleep. That's just cold, Man. I understood that when I had a baby I would spend many months trying to get her to sleep through the night....more

Too Fat To Cheer? CBS Houston Polls Readers On Cheerleader's Weight

Kelsey is a dancer for the OKC Thunder Girls with an enviable physique. But this week, she's not getting press for her moves between quarters. Rather, she's the subject of ridicule by CBS Houston (in a post that stated that they're simply reporting the "word on the streets of OKC") for being too chunky to cheer. Or is she? Claire Crawford, the writer at CBS Houston who took on this hard-hitting story, wasn't ready to make a solo judgement....more

Would You Implant Your Child With a Tracking Device?

I wasn't really paying attention as the TV happened to be tuned to The View on ABC. I wasn't paying attention, until the topic began with the disappearance of Etan Patz in 1979 when he was six years old. Until I actually heard Whoopi Goldberg state make the following statement: "Is it too creepy for me to say, we should, we maybe need to start thinking about one of those little tracking things in children? Because they put it in our animals... ...more

Over-Scheduled Kids: Are All of These "Classes" Necessary?

During a pediatrician appointment last week, I finally heard the words I had been dreading: Do you have any plans for preschool? Up to this point, I was comfortable in my brand of torture, fielding the highs and lows of parenting three children aged three and under, allowing my children to navigate life hand-in-hand with each other. I knew this day would arrive, of course, though it still managed to catch me off guard. Images of viruses, skin rashes, strep throat, and an empty house swirled in my head. I realized I wanted none of those things....more

Piercing Babies' Ears: Why I Did It To My Kids

Every so often the “to pierce or not to pierce a baby’s ears” debate flares up in the U.S. This is probably because there are more and more little Latina girls running around with earrings adorning their cute little earlobes. A lot of Anglo moms consider the practice barbaric and even borderline child abuse....more

A List for a Bad Day: 10 Things I Love About Being a Mom

It's so easy to be fussy. It is so easy to think about all the reasons why I'd be completely justified to just sit down, right now, in the middle of the floor -- and cry. But I'm not going to do that. I'm not going to do that, because I have too much to be thankful for... and so do you....more
