Of course I had to dive headfirst into this group.  Well, truth to tell, I don't dive (never could get over the certainty that I'd hit my face), so let's just say I JUMPED in.  I'm thrilled to see that our midlife cohort is among the first to sign up (and thanks to Nordette!).  It was almost a year ago that we midlifers had a huge discussion on BlogHer asking--where's the place for us!   I started MidLifeBloggers then and Allison began WomenBloom and now there's 50 Is The New  Read more >

Why I Stay Home

I have another one of those social thingies to go to tonight. I was all hot-to-trot when I first heard about it, drinks at an Irish pub downtown, 6-8pm. I planned the 'when shall I wash my hair, do my nails' around it--all the girly stuff that makes going out an anticipatory blowout. But now that the 'witching hour is drawing nigh, I'm all--eh, meh, and bleh.  Read more >

Mental Illness: When We Can't Make Sense of the Senseless

There is no hard and fast test for mental illness. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV), which is the bible of the mental health field, can do no more than categorize the propensity for certain symptoms as being probably indicative of certain conditions. If the fellow down the street has at least two of the following-delusions, hallucinations, odd speech, odd behavior, or seems emotionless-chances are he may be schizophrenic. Or maybe not.  Read more >

MidLife Bloggers - We're Here!

There's a conversation going on at BlogHer that I've been having with myself for more than a year: Where are all the middle-aged women bloggers? | BlogHer? Cecelia over at MetaFootnotes started it several weeks ago when she introduced herself to BlogHer. She wrote about trying to find "a voice that I want to hear." That voice is of a woman in her midlife (fill in the age range yourself; these days when  Read more >

About Me:

According to the BlogHer stats, I have been a member for three years and, as of 12/21/09, forty four weeks. In that time, I've gone through two editing sessions with my bio. This time, I'm wiping the whole thing and starting anew. In the beginning, I was a feature magazine writer. I burnt out on writing for a living, however, so I decided--aha! I'll teach. For that I needed an additional degree, but somehow I didn't know when to stop. So now all these years later, I have two Master's degrees and am ABD (All But Dissertation) in English Lit. Then I started blogging. In the beginning, I blogged as ByJane. It was one of those Life blogs that had no focus other than whatever caught my attention at the moment. Then, one day a couple of years ago, I started MidLifeBloggers, and ever since, that has caught all my attention. MidLifeBloggers is an on-line magazine that features the writing, art, and photography of bloggers who identify as being in midlife (we start in our late 30s and go to our late 60s!). The topic of the posts aren't specific to any midlife issue; if it's happening to one of us, that's all that counts. Our BlogRoll is continually growing, as is the roster of those who write for us. Every Wednesday, we have the Writer's Workshop, and I just formally folded the ByJane blog onto MidLifeBloggers. In addition, we've got a new feature reviewing books, products and offering contests that are of interest to those in midlife.
