Seafood. Summer. It's a Match!

I love a juicy grilled steak in the summer, but when the heat and humidity really crank up, what's more refreshing is seafood. Cooked anywhere but my kitchen! Since really fine neighborhood restaurants in San Diego are bursting out all over, one of my choices for a simple and delicious seafood dinner is a new local place in San Diego's North Park neighborhood: Sea Rocket Bistro.  Read more >

Love the Garlic -- Majestic Garlic, That Is!

I love San Diego's farmers markets. Yesterday, I drove about 10 miles up the I-15 to meet my friend Gayle at the Scripps Ranch Farmers Market. And, one of my favorite vendors, Majestic Garlic, was there. I've been enjoying their products for about a year. They make a vegan garlic paste in a variety of flavors and I've been working my way through them as I discover new ways to use it. This time, I replenished my "original" stock (just the garlic) and picked up the  Read more >

What is Unpelted Wheat? Mystery Solved!

Recently, I stopped by a local Middle Eastern market in San Diego and was noodling around the packaged foods when I found a bag of unpelted wheat offered by Sadaf. Looked interesting so I brought it home. I couldn't find any reference to it except that it is used in Iranian cooking for a recipe called sabzi, to celebrate the New Year.  Read more >

Top 10 Hot Weather Culinary Life Savers

It’s a hot and humid Saturday afternoon in San Diego and I can’t bear the idea of turning on the oven or even the stovetop burners. I don’t even want to grill. I don’t want to be near anything over 78 degrees. This time of year is pretty much about having things around that satisfy hunger without requiring sweat-provoking activities like sautéing, roasting or boiling. I have some favorite cooling foods—some that I’ve found at the markets and some that are easy to prepare and are mostly about fruits and  Read more >

About Me:
I am nothing if not a foodie. But, by day I'm also an award-winning freelance writer and host of San Diego Foodstuff (www.sandiegofoodstuff.com). Along with the serious stuff that pays the bills, I've enjoyed years of travel writing, with visits to Australia, Canada (both coasts), England, France, Amsterdam, Baja California and lots of U.S. cities. I've tasted big fat Moreton Bay Bugs in Brisbane and smoked eel fresh from the local factory in Amsterdam, tiny wild strawberries I picked roadside in the Magdalene Islands and the juiciest possible rotisserie chicken, accompanied by flavorful socca pancakes, in Nice's Old City. But as enjoyable as my travels have been, nothing beats feeding the people you love. And if you cook, unless you're a farmer, shopping is part of the pleasure. I am a first-class shopper and love to share my discoveries. That's what San Diego Foodstuff is all about. Fabulous food finds in our region. Together, let's see where we can find the makings of a great meal! And listen to me on the Gourmet Club, which I co-host, on Wednesday mornings at 11 Pacific (www.signonradio.com).
