Why Everyone Should Get a Flu Shot

Flu shot clinic sign

After a week or so, my daughter recovered and resumed life as usual. It sure is interesting how a brief brush with an unpredictable disease can change your perspective. The unspoken fear that we faced last year has faded into a childhood memory for Marissa. Surprisingly, it appears that public memory has been short-lived as well — which troubles me as a mom of five active kids.  Read more >

How to Keep Your Family From Getting You Sick Over the Holidays

Woman Sneezing on Airplane

Sitting around the table, it wasn’t just the occasional family drama that made me cringe. It was the fact that my very own relatives were so distracted by the “good eats” that they forgot to take some simple preventive health measures -– things that could have easily prevented the germs from being passed along with the pumpkin pie. While the seasonal flu may not be very prevalent right now, I couldn’t help but think that it’s only a matter of time. While the flu is known to come on as quickly as our post-turkey comas, it’s symptoms are much more severe. Therefore, in an effort to prevent the flu from ruining future family gatherings, I thought I’d share some simple stay-healthy tips.  Read more >

About Me:

Like most women I know, I'm a highly committed, over tasked mom just trying to do it all.

By day, I am the lead contributor at Shot of Prevention, a unique community blog that provides an ongoing discussion regarding immunizations, the science behind them and the choices that parents make to protect their children from preventable diseases.

By night (or shall I say late afternoon) I am chauffer, cook, teacher, coach and counselor extraordinaire, for my five daughters ages 14 down to 5.  As the wife of a career Marine, I am no stranger to moving, living far from family,  enduring mutiple deployments and living with the knowledge that one day my husband may give his life in service of this great country.

While there is much that I accept I can't control, I believe the choices my husband and I make about our family's health will have an enormous impact on the lives of our children.  However, I am a strategic communications specialist.  Not a public health advisor or medical professional.  Therefore, I am constantly seeking credible information from within the Shot of Prevention blog community and the Vaccinate Your Baby Facebook page.  This is where you too can go to gather insight, learn about resources and discuss current health issues.  Ultimately, our mission is to help parents decipher the overwhelmingly clinical nature of immunization information in order to make it relavent to their own family's health.

I invite everyone to join me in this meaningful, insightful discussion and I look forward to hearing from you soon.
