Kelly DeBie

I am a writer, a doula and a photographer.  A wife, a sister, a daughter, a mother and a friend.  I'm officially a member of the sandwich generation, trying to figure out how to keep it together.  Come along for the ride...it's rarely dull around here.

Colorado Flood Clean-up: I Held a Lifetime in My Hands Today

In my hands today, I held an entire lifetime of memories. Then I threw it away. Pieces of a life built over decades and decades. In my hands today, I held mementos of vacations, trinkets from a career long over, first editions of books printed nearly 100 years ago.Trade journals and huge volumes and certificates that had once been proudly displayed. Gone.In my hands today, I held film reels and photographs and journals filled with handwritten pages....more

Putting My Life Online is Not Easy, But It's Worth Doing

I talk about having PTSD and going to therapy and having anxiety and all that because I need to. I need to know that it's out there. I wear my heart on my sleeve because I have to.  I have to because I'm exceptionally good at hiding things unless I force myself to reveal them. ...more

What the DOMA and Prop 8 rulings mean, and what they don't

Today is a historic one in our nation, certainly, but requires a little bit more explanation than the mainstream media tends to give.Lucky for you all, I've been glued to the interwebs for hours already and have read all the opinions.I will go over each case, and tell you what the effective results are. I will also tell you what these opinions do not cover, and what doors have been opened for future litigation on the subject of marriage equality....more

Why the Kermit Gosnell Murder Trial Doesn't Make Me Oppose Legal Abortion

In the past few days, some of my most conservative friends on Facebook have been ranting about the trial of Kermit Gosnell. Questioning why the case isn't being covered by the mainstream media. Wondering why more people aren't aware of who he is, what he is charged with, and all that....more

Dream Big - The US Women's National Soccer Team and My Daughters

The world we live in today is one unlike any other in history for little girls like mine. When we tell them that they can fly into outer space, that they can save lives, that they can run companies, that they can someday become President, we know that we are telling them the truth. They can dream big and know that those dreams are possible. ...more

That Morning, September 11th

That morning was just about perfect. It was the kind of morning that I'd spent years wishing for, at times never knowing whether it would come to fruition or not.I'd gone through the only routine that mattered anymore.  Sometime around 2a.m., the baby awoke.  He was retrieved by my husband and brought to bed with us.  He nursed and fell back to sleep peacefully after laying on my chest for a bit....more

Dear Lance (p.s. It's not about the bike),

You don't know who I am, and I am fairly certain that you don't care.  We've never met, even though it feels like I've known you a long time.  In fact, I'm absolutely sure that you'll never catch wind of this message I'm about to write to you.  I'm not sure that anything I could say to you would matter right now, as you watch the illusioned world you created fall apart around you.But I'm going to say it all anyway....more

Who is really fighting in the Mommy Wars?

As predicted, the nation is abuzz this morning because of an article Time Magazine selected as it's cover story this week.  Even more so because of the emotionally charged image it chose for the cover. There's one reason, and one reason alone that they chose this picture to put on the cover.  To stir controversy, to force a reaction, to sell magazines.  That's what they are here for, after all.  They want to make money, not friends....more

The denial of citizenship, and the power of paranoia

In this country we live in, we sometimes forget that we are, by and large, a nation of immigrants.  Very few of us can claim "we were here first", and everyone else is a late-coming outsider. The vast majority of U.S. citizens can trace their family lines to another place and time. And yet, we forget this.We want to close borders and build walls and legislate who can and cannot enter.  There is a paranoia that comes from talk about immigration, as though it is now something to be threatened by....more
