Burma: Support Women-Owned Small Businesses

On my recent trip to Burma, I was completely off the tourist track, taking local river boats 300 miles up the Chindwin River. On one of our first stops, as I sipped the standard Burmese daytime drink--strong black tea enriched with sweetened condensed milk-- I became fascinated by a curtain strung across one corner of the otherwise open and airy riverfront tea house. What was going on behind that blue sheet with the yellow duckies printed on it, through which women came and went?  Read more >

A Career 180: From Software Exec to Ranch Owner

Dina Bennett's ranch house

Sometimes I have to pinch myself. This many years into my new career, it's still hard to believe that I'm living on a 2,100-acre ranch. That when I finish breakfast I will saddle my young horse and ride him along dirt roads dappled by shady aspens, with droopy-headed purple columbines and wild rosebushes abloom with sweet pink blossoms appearing like treasures in the tall green grass.  Read more >

Coping with the Stresses of Elder Care: Speaking Up for Yourself

speaking up for yourself

In my previous post about elder care issues, I came up with 10 ideas for managing the stresses of being a caregiver or care manager for elderly or ill parents. Here's the first one from the list: Learn how to speak up for what you need and what you want. Why is this even important? Whether it's leaving a doctor's office with a clear understanding of a medical issue, or knowing for certain that your parent's laundry will be done regularly, knowing what you want and asking for it is the best way to clean up your To Do list.  Read more >

Coping with the Stresses of Elder Care: Doctor visits and You

In my previous post on Elder Care issues, which I called Speaking Up For Yourself, I set out some tips for those caring for an aging parent, on how to start speaking up for what you need and what you want.  For me, as my mother aged with dementia, speaking up was an essential skill for regaining some control over my universe. I often think back to that time (my mother passed away a year and a half ago), on what I could have done differently or better.  Here are some things related to speaking up that I found invaluable.  Read more >

About Me:

After a successful career in software services, I left the field and moved to a working hay and cattle ranch high in the Colorado Rockies, near the Wyoming border. What did I know about ranching?  As a New York girl who grew up in a bedroom community of Manhattan and went to private school in Riverdale, I can honestly say, nothing.   What do I know about ranching now?   Lots.  I blog about my life on the ranch, the people I've come to respect and love in this remote rural enclave of 1400 souls in 2400 square miles, the things that frustrate me, fill me with joy, enrage me and excite me.

The other subject on which I'm avid about blogging, is caregiving for the elderly.  From time to time I will post thoughts and suggestions drawn from my personal experience caring for my aged mother who had dementia.
