Think about NOT Forwarding that E-mail

arrow

Recently a friend sent an e-mail to me (and a bunch of other people) asking for prayers for a battalion of Marines that had lost nine soldiers in four days. It included this sentence: “Nothing in the media about these guys because the news does not seems to care.”  Read more >

Rollover mopes

A friend of mine told me that she allows five minutes a day to mope or feel sorry for herself. I like the idea of slotting "five-minute mope" in the day minder.Remember Holly Hunter’s short, stupendous bout of hysterics in “Broadcast News”? I aspire to that sort of efficient catharsis. But I’d also like the option of setting aside the unused minutes, for those times when I need a longer session of self-pity. Thus I suggest a new personal indulgence: Rollover mopes.  Read more >

The life I once led.

Eight years ago today I headed west. I had no idea what I might do, no idea that I was about to be reborn. In fact, I couldn’t see any kind of future for myself. The only thing I knew for sure was that the life I’d lived up until that moment was no longer bearable.  Read more >

If Lady Gaga were a personal finance blogger....

It’s the intro to a song parody.Although I listen only to the classical station, the Lady is ubiquitous enough that even I am familiar with “Bad Romance.”One day when the tune was stuck in my head, I turned it into a personal finance lesson – and yes, I really do have a PF point to make after the initial silliness. The following can be sung (if you must) to the tune of "Bad Romance."Ah ah ah-ah-ah  Read more >

About Me Tags:

College dropout (for emotional and financial reasons), single mom and then stuck in emotionally/psychologically abusive marriage, finally broke free and went broke (waiting for divorce and supporting disabled adult daughter), returned to school in late 40s (still broke), worked a handful of part-time jobs. Wrote about it for MSN Money ("Surviving and thriving on $12,000 a year" and "Living poor and loving it") and was then invited to be one of two original writers for MSN Money's "Smart Spending" blog. Promoted to personal finance columnist ("Living With Less") in 2009.

Finally got the $#@!$ degree in December 2009, a B.A. in the Comparative History of Ideas (a major found only at the University of Washington).

In February 2012 MSN Money inaugurated the "Frugal Cool" blog (http://money.msn.com/frugal-living), for which I write every weekday. I write every other week for Get Rich Slowly (http://getrichslowly.org). Finally, I have my own website, Surviving and Thriving (http://www.donnafreedman.com). In my spare time? I travel a lot.

Professional honors: Writing prizes from the Women's Sports Foundation, the Society of Professional Journalists, the National College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, the Association for Women in Communications, the Society of American Travel Writers and the Alaska Press Club.

Newspaper journalist for 18 years. Have freelanced for publications as varied as Humpty Dumpty and The New York Times Review of Books, The Chicago Tribune and Quail Unlimited, The Philadelphia Inquirer and Costco Connection.

Just started my own site, "Surviving and Thriving," at http://www.donnafreedman.com.
