I moved to Salt Lake City from Michigan in 2007. I am a reporter on the night police beat at The Salt Lake Tribune, which leaves plenty of daytime hours to get out and play. I began learning to ski last winter. Come summer, I put boot to trail in the Wasatch and Uinta mountains.

My Kodak DX7440 Zoom point-and-shoot goes where I go except when I get stupid about charging the battery. I am a novice photographer and videographer, and I like to find new ways to look at things.

I have been a reporter since 2003, when I took a job in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. There I wrote stories, occasionally delivered papers and shoveled lake-effect snow out of the rooftop satellite. I have covered governments, crime, education, tribal politics and features; I also was a columnist in Saginaw, Mich. I have won some statewide awards for newswriting and a national award for humor columns.

Before I was a reporter, I was a college English teacher in China. I have traveled a lot and am happiest when a map is in my hand, mostly because that means I soon will be lost. I have a terrible sense of direction and a gift for stumbling into incredible strangers.

I grew up in Iowa and majored in English at Luther College, where I was a bad student. I also spent a year at the University of Nottingham in England.
