Is My Willpower Challenge Over Now?

When we first starting talking about Kelly McGonigal's book The Willpower Instinct: How Self-Control Works, Why It Matters, and What You Can Do To Get More of It, I was intrigued but I wasn't sure how I'd feel about actually doing my willpower challenge. What would I learn? Would be be scary? What if I failed? Well, I've learned and I've struggled. Does that mean I'm done now? ...more

Discovering My Challenge Within My Willpower Challenge

I have to say that my willpower challenge is still going well. If I learned anything at all from Kelly McGonigal's The Willpower Instinct: How Self-Control Works, Why It Matters, and What You Can Do To Get More of It it's that paying attention to why you are -- or are not -- doing something is really important....more

What I've Learned (So Far) From My Willpower Challenge

I was scared when I announced my willpower challenge last week. While I totally understood why Kelly McGonigal suggests that you do one while reading her book, The Willpower Instinct: How Self-Control Works, Why It Matters, and What You Can Do To Get More of It, I was wary. I was concerned not only about what I might learn about myself -- what if none of the strategies worked?...more

What Is Your Willpower Challenge?

In her new book The Willpower Instinct: How Self-Control Works, Why It Matters, and What You Can Do To Get More of It Kelly McGonigal, Ph.D., suggests the best way to learn about the self-control methods she discusses is to take a willpower challenge. I hesitated. I am not big on resolutions, perhaps because I never stick with them. I was also intrigued because her book offered me some new perspective on willpower and self-control. ...more

The 10 Year Plan

Before I read Kate and David Marshall's My Life Map: A Journal to Help Shape Your Future I would have told you that 10 year plans give me hives. One of the most dreaded questions in a job interview for me was always one about where I saw myself in five years. I still may not be exactly eager to plan out my life in 10 year chunks, but at least I know how that it's possible to do it in a way that doesn't cause me panic....more

Making Play A Priority

I know I've said this but my favorite parts of Kate and David Marshall's My Life Map: A Journal to Help Shape Your Future really were the subject maps. I liked the service map because it made me examine the role charity plays in my life. I liked the learning map because I'm a big nerd....more

Lifelong Learning For The Win

My favourite parts of Kate and David Marshall's new book, My Life Map: A Journal to Help Shape Your Future were the subject maps. I loved the subjects they chose to focus on and I really, really loved that one of the subjects they consider a key to happiness was learning. I am going to let my nerd flag fly and say I truly love learning new things. ...more

Charting a Path With "My Life Map"

When we embark on a trip, we're far more likely to make it to our destination easily if we know our starting point and plan a route to our destination. We plot our chosen path and, if necessary, directions for any side trips we want to take. That same line of thinking can be transferred to life paths as well -- it's easier to figure out how to get to where we want to be once we figure out where we are starting from. And it's easier to figure out our starting point once we figure out where we've been. That is the theory that Kate and David Marshall apply in their new publication, My Life Map: A Journal to Help Shape Your Future. ...more
