Two Degrees of Devastation: New Zealand Earthquake

Christchurch after the earthquake

Eight hundred miles and Cook's Strait away from Christchurch, we didn't feel the physical shocks of the quake up in the Bay of Islands, but the emotional ones have hit us all. They've been pulling bodies out of the rubble while the nation watches in horror. We've been told there are at least 114 fatalities, but to steel ourselves for many more. There may be as many as 300.  Read more >

About Me:

Who is this Kiwi, you say? Well, in the spirit of full disclosure, I'm not a real live New Zealander; I'm an expat from the US South. But "Frugal-American-Expat-Ex-Southern-Belle-Who-Has-Been-Living-In-New-Zealand-For-Years" just didn't have the same ring to it as "Frugal Kiwi." And just think of the nightmare of coming up with the logo.

I love it here in New Zealand. The hangis, the hakas, the wekas, the wakas. I love 'em all. But New Zealand isn't the cheapest place to live. As luck would have it, I was raised up on muddy old river catfish, black-eyed peas from the garden and cornbread, so frugality comes naturally. My mama says it is my sharecropper's genes and she might just be right.

In 2009, I had a stroke of brilliance stroke. In my mid 30s. I couldn't recommend it as a fun experience. During my convalescence a natural tendency to frugality blossomed into a full-fledged necessity. I'm on the mend these days, but my frugal ways continue. To celebrate my recovery, I thought I'd share a tip or two to others who are frugal by nature or necessity.

Most of days, I'm elbow (or at least fingertip) deep in wool, felting away. Visit my online portfolio The Felted Kiwi to see what I've been creating. I also work as a freelance writer and web designer. If you are interested in hiring me for felting commissions, freelance copywriting and/or web design, contact me here
