Words That Just Make Everyone Uncomfortable

I love words; I really do. The right words in the right hands can give expression to the part of man that mirrors God. But some words are just incurably, gratuitously dumb. ...more

"You're Pretty Old"

The boy cleared his throat. “You’re pretty old.” I put my hand on my chest and coughed. The mom sagged. I'm pretty sure I heard her moan. “I’m so sorry,” she mouthed. I winced as he pulled out the chair next to mine. He sat. Took his gloves off and rubbed his hands on his jeaned thighs. “That didn’t come out right, did it?” ...more

Justice Thomas' Wife Asks Anita Hill for an Apology; She Should Ask Her Husband

In an October 9 column for Slate, Dahlia Lithwick explained that historically, it's been very hard to be the wife of a Supreme Court justice. According to Lithwick, earlier generations of women, subjected to the forced anonymity traditionally expected of Justices' spouses, have been driven to drink, illness and despair. Some feel that explains why the wife of Supreme Court Associate Justice Clarence Thomas felt compelled to leave a voicemail message on the office telephone of Anita Hill, the law professor who accused him of sexual harassment during his 1991 confirmation hearing. According to the New York Times, who said Hill played the recording for them, Virginia "Ginni" Thomas said that through prayer, Hill might be led to offer an explanation and apology "for what you did with my husband." ...more

Politely Powerless: When Self-Defense Fails

Yesterday, I suffered unwanted sexual advances from a man in a way that I can’t seem to find an appropriate word for. Was it molestation? Sexual assault? Too nuanced to label? Interestingly, the reactions of others only added to the confusion. ...more

Who You Calling An Elder Blogger?

I was at the BlogHer conference in New York when one of the panelists commented that “even” her own mother blogs. She called her mother “one of those elder bloggers.” Meaning, she said, “anyone over 50 who blogs.” I pried my gnarled fingers off my Underwood, slammed down my Ensure and quaked, “Say, what, girlie?” That’s a joke. I would never say anything so ageist, but I did gulp and turned to my daughter to ask, “Might she be talking about moi?” ...more

Why the Anti-Aging Industry is an Assault on Womens' Well-Being

Gaea Yudron Sage's Play Exploring creative aging, wellness and spirit www.sagesplay.comIn 2002, three scientists published an article in Scientific American noting that "no currently marketed intervention has yet been proved to slow, stop or reverse human aging." But that doesn't stop millions of people from buying expensive anti-aging creams, utilizing various forms of cosmetic surgery, and generally doing everything they can to stave off any evidence that they are in fact growing older by the minute. Playing on everyone's fear of looking older is worth a lot of money-- the world's anti-aging industry has grown to $115 billion. ...more

Ageism--Time for some real change in attitudes toward aging

The word ageism refers to prejudice against older people. The word was coined in the Sixties, at the same time that feminism and the civil rights movement made sexism and racism into big social movements. Nothing like that happened with ageism. Over 40 years later, it is still what some people call the last unchallenged social prejudice. When I entered my 50s, I realized that ageism just wasn't going to work for me, and shouldn't really be acceptable to anybody....more
