How Clean is Your Air?

As a college graduate deciding where to begin my career, it didn't occur to me to use air quality as one of the criteria.  I was blinded by love for my husband-to-be.  His home, western Pennsylvania, became my home.  I could have returned to Ohio or relocated to Hawaii.  But no, I chose to reside north of Pittsburgh.   ...more

Organic Produce and Why It Matters (or, My Letter to the Manager at Giant Eagle)

What follows is a letter I wrote tonight to the manager of my local grocery store.  I was really irritated by a response I got from his produce manager last week when I asked about organic grapes.  Instead of just ranting about it and letting it go (otherwise known as complaining, which no one needs) I took a step towards solving my problem by communicating my dissatisfaction to him.  Cross your fingers!  I'll let you know if I get a response.  (*Personal names and location have been changed.) *...more

A Griswold Family Christmas

One of my favorite movies of all time is National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation.  Through the entire film, Clark Griswold is motivated to capture all the various traditional elements of Christmas and tie them together into the perfect family holiday:  the Griswold Family Christmas. What makes this movie so funny?  The humor lies in the very real truths the writers captured.  Deep down, what many of us want for Christmas doesn't lie in the boxes and wrapping paper.  We try to grasp at the straws of a perfect Christmas---the perfect Chri...more
