The Great Non-Dairy Ice Cream Taste-Off

July's the Month of Ice Cream on BlogHer -- and as you know, I adore Month of Anything Food (cf. Month of Pie) and would love to play along. But my stupid tummy hates ice cream. Serve me up more than a teaspoon of frozen dairy -- ice cream, gelato, fro-yo, soft-serve, semifreddo, ice milk -- and you WILL regret it. I will, anyway. ...more
I'm a coconut fan too! I recommend <a ...more

Reusable Pads: Get Green, Period

I use washable cloth menstrual pads. (Ha! How's that for just jumping into things without any preamble?) Squeamish people, this post is filled with details about something that comes out of my girly bits every month. If you’re a girl, then there’s a pretty good chance that stuff comes out of your girly bits every month too. Or it used to. Or it will someday. So if you’re bothered by talk of menstruation...skip on by this post....more

I Went Soap-free and I Liked It

I've gone soap free. I like it. And I'm not alone. Okay -- I'm not entirely soap-free, but I'm definitely very soap-lite. But before I get into the details, here's the story. It all started with a little curiosity, when I read Sean Bonner's soap-free story on BoingBoing. The local L.A. blogger revealed he's been soap and shampoo-free for a year -- aside from his hands, which he still washes with soap -- and enjoying softer, healthier skin, a dandruff-free scalp, and more manageable hair -- while smelling sweet too! ...more

I may have to try this no soap thing next! How long was it for you before your scalp adjusted? ...more

Downsized Kitchen: Living Well with an Itty Bitty Cooking Space

If my kitchen were only half its size, would I still be able to eat healthfully? That was one of my biggest fears, moving from a relatively spacious apartment to a less than 400 square foot studio earlier this month. With little cooking space, and pretty much no counter space, would dining in get too difficult -- or even impossible? ...more

5 Simple Living Bloggers Show Downsizing Can be Smart-sizing

Early this month, I moved from what I considered a relatively spacious half-bedroom apartment in Santa Monica -- to a tiny, less-than-400-square-foot apartment in West Hollywood. I just tried to figure out exactly how small it is -- but I can't locate the measuring tape in its new hiding spot! In any case, the move got me seriously thinking about tiny living, downsizing, simplicity, organization, and efficiency. And thanks to both the economy and the environmental movement, many other women are rethinking their personal American dreams, wondering if smaller can, indeed, make for a better, happier life. ...more
