Susan Driscoll

I'm actually just one demented dame with two knitting needles, going through menopause with too many bad ideas running through my head.  My oldest is 21 and will live with me forever because that's the new "trend".  Good for her, bad for me.  My youngest is 18 and is attending ODU majaoring in Speech Pathology and Audiology.  She will take care of me in my dotty age. I've been married 27 years, yes, to the same man.  I'm a teacher and a writer.  I'm politically fanatical.  And I adore my horse above all else.  I'm a jack of all trades, master of none but I'm too freaking old to care.  I'm going to enjoy the years I have left even if that means putting duct tape across many mouths.

My Friend Talked Smack Behind My Back

Dear Mouthy Housewives, I have a dear friend who I’ve occasionally helped out financially when she was low on cash. For example, I’ve paid for her meals and drinks while we were out and about. Recently, she arranged an outing for our group of friends (a concert) and she paid in advance for all of us. I was unable to pay her back before the concert and let her know this (I proposed to pay her back within the next two weeks). All hell broke loose and she called everyone within our social circle to complain about what a bad a friend I was, and how my selfishness knew no bounds. ...more

Unmotivating: How Your Stats Match Up Against Other Writers

Don't just worry about your stats, Gawker tells its writers with the new graph it revealed in June. Worry about your stats as compared to everyone else's stats. To give their writers feedback as to how their pieces perform in relation to other pieces on the site, Gawker has created a graph that visually displays each writer's page views.  AJ Daulerio is not only back at Gawker, but top of the list.  Whereas poor Taylor Berman's purple line is barely on the screen. ...more
I agree.  Comparing stats only brings me depression and sometimes the thought, "why am I ...more

Blogging Boundaries: This Part of My Life is Now Off-Limits

Heather and Jon Armstrong made a divorce announcement yesterday on the heels of their separation announcement last spring. The identical posts on their blogs, Dooce and Blurbomat, both had comments closed, and both clearly outlined how they hoped their news would be treated by their readers. ...more

Should I Fight with My 3-Year-Old to Teach Her to Read?

My oldest is 5 and I taught her how to read using How to Teach Your Child To Read in 100 Easy Lessons. It did not take 100 lessons, it took maybe 72. However, those 72 lessons spread out over the course of about 4 months were the most painful moments for me as a parent. ...more

Three Tips to Preserving Your Self-Esteem on Social Media

But what about all our other happily coupled Facebook friends? Are we ready to be faced with over-exposed photos of newly-placed diamond rings or our cousin gushing about the romantic anniversary dinner her partner cooked up last night? For some, social media like Facebook and Instagram can become a minefield of social comparison traps. ...more

The Sacrifices Moms Make: Someday We'll Have Nice Things Again

We all started from the same place. We needed that little bundle of joy to make our family feel whole. All we could think about was stylish nursery decor, adorable baby clothes, tiny newborn diapers and that pink lotions that is, in fact, the epitome of baby smell. This baby will teach us what unconditional love is all about. She will make us better people. All we need is this precious child and our life will be perfect. Perfect indeed, until she ruins everything that you own....more

An Addiction That No One Talks About: Candy Crush

I have avoided it for as long as I can. I feel like I have a duty to discuss an epidemic that is affecting moms all over this great country. There is a dirty little secret that no one wants you to know about. Especially all of the moms. People are probably going to be mad at me after this but it is time to shine some light on an addiction that has the potential to damage the family dynamic and possibly modern civilization as we know it now. That is right. I am talking about Candy Crush....more

Thank You, Angelina.

Thank you, Angelina. Because the first thing I thought, after hearing the news story about her elective double-mastectomy, was “if she can do it, I can do it.” When I found out, back in November of 2011, that I have the BRCA-1 mutation, the  decision to opt for a preventative double mastectomy, followed by an oopharectomy, was pretty much a “no-brainer.”...more
