Fall Television Premieres 2013: Everything Old is New Again

In 1978, the crop of new shows on broadcast TV consisted of robots, cops, detectives, lawyers, moms, girl buddies, boy buddies, and Robin Williams (Mork and Mindy). In 2013, the new fall TV series will include…the same exact thing. It’s back to the future time, everybody! Image: Fox ...more

Pick Your Favorite Gale Anne Hurd Movie/TV Show

Let's face it, life is fraught with peril. Even if the last scary thing that happened to you was having to terminate a spider in the shower, it seems one can't open a laptop or turn on a TV without seeing updates on the latest mayhem the 21st century has to offer. Plane crashes, terrorism, mass shootings...it's a non-stop horror show. Which is why, oddly enough, I find that sometimes the perfect escape from real life fright is to spend a couple of hours in a dark theater being scared witless by a movie. ...more

Domestic Violence: Are We Finally Talking About It?

What's All the Buzz About "Fat Talk"?

Lately, I've been seeing a lot of press about a phenomenon known as "fat talk" -- a type of discussion being attributed almost exclusively to women. It's a back-and-forth conversation in which we make disparaging remarks about our bodies. It usually starts with one individual saying something like "Ugh, my butt looks so huge in these jeans". This generates a cacophony of competing comments, such as, "Never mind your butt, just look at the size of my thighs."...more

I smell popcorn! It's late spring, and the thundering herd of summer blockbuster movies are lining up to clamor for your attention. All the studios are hoping for a box-office-monster hit, so they're piling on the stars and the special effects to get people's butts off the beach and into the theater seats. Nobody did it better than Steven Spielberg, who basically invented the summer smash hit with "Jaws" in 1975. His movie literally scared people out of the water....more

Which Of Mom's Food Dishes Were Your Favorites?

Isn't it amazing how food (especially great food) can evoke the past? This week's poll wonders about your favorite food memories from childhood. Did your mother cook something so special that you dream about it to this day? Was it a casserole? A secret recipe passed down from one generation to the next? My mother loved to cook, and around the holidays our big kitchen was alive with the fragrance of cinnamon and nutmeg. I learned how to cook Swedish meatballs from my mom, who in turn had learned it from her mom, who was actually born and raised in Sweden....more
