Tragedy Makes You Ache in Faithful Place

Some things twist your heart like a baby drowning in a shallow well. Some things wrench your gut like an innocent abused boy who turns into an abuser himself. Some things do both and simultaneously raise a salt-shredded deep and painful ache in the soft tissues of your throat: even if you never let it subside in the gulps and sobs, you know it is there.  Read more >

A Good Hard Look Challenges You To Do Just That

There are times where people have said that I look at life through rose-colored glasses; I consider myself to be more of a realist. I've survived some pretty tough stuff and I see people and life with a balance for the good and the bad. Flannery O'Connor from Ann Napolitano's A Good Hard Look seems to be the same way. She has realized that reality is a coexistence of the good and the bad; it isn't one or the other.  Read more >

Karen White Built Greatness with The Beach Trees

It was March 2007. I was perched on the edge of a large stone circular fountain conveniently placed on a large plaza. The air was oppressively humid, but every once in awhile a slight breeze would lift up some of the flowing water and sprinkle it over the crowd. I was in Shreveport. That feeling -- that experience -- of the heavy and humid air, cooling drops of water, drawls of the strolling people, taste of redbeansandrice (it’s all one word), and sense of freedom has never left me. A few days ago, I was in Iowa and I was sitting in my living room reclined on my couch. Then, suddenly, a few pages into The Beach Trees by Karen White I was transported back to The South, only this time to N’awleans and Biloxi, Mississippi.. Like The South itself, the tone of this novel was sultry, mysterious, complex, and warm.  Read more >

The Kid: Challenging and Disconcerting, but Informative

I flipped through the last clean-cut pages and asked myself, "How do you even begin to describe The Kid by Sapphire?" Such an innocuous title reminiscent for many of hugs, birthday presents, baseball fields or basketball courts, and the smell of Spaghetti Os. Not this kid. Not Abdul Jamal Louis Jones. Not Jamal Abdul Jones. Not J.J. nor Crazy Horse nor Abdul-Azi Ali nor Arthur.  Read more >

About Me:

Jen (aka Emerald) is a vibrant young supermodel who drives an expensive sports car one hundred miles per hour around sixty degree turns. She always takes baths with attendants hovering around the massive tub carting deluxe towels, cold glasses of champagne, and more bath salts. She has nary a wrinkle, nary a flab, and a massive rack.

The real Jen was born on a cold winter’s day (February 3rd to be exact) and is somewhere in her twenties (for now). She has one husband (Aaron), three children who delight in driving her batty, and a zoo. The real Jen also enjoys baths, but does so with ear plugs in to get some peace. She occasionally drinks some wine in the bath, but never has attendants hovering, unless you count the aforementioned children.

The real Jen has a multitude of hobbies, but does not have a sports car. She scrapbooks, gardens (indoor and out), takes fantastically awesome pictures, plays computer games, and reads the library to the ground. She also has a weird fascination with brewing beer and cooking from scratch.
