“You Look So Skinny” and Other Non-Compliments

“You look so skinny!” I cringe. I tight-lipped smile at my friend, my co-worker, the random lady from church, someone’s boyfriend, a child, someone old, someone young — all of them. I know I’m supposed to offer up thanks for this supposed compliment, but I want to launch into a tirade instead ....more

Race Recap: 4th of July 4 Miler

This morning I ran in the 2nd Annual 2012 Red, White and Run 4 Miler on the 4th through our local YMCA. I didn’t decide for certain that I was running until the day before as getting information about the race itself proved difficult. This Is Why

This. This is why there are so many songs about rainbows. Beyond “what’s on the other side.” Beyond “over.” Beyond whatever waits at the “end.” The simple and complex beauty; the dare-to-hope and hope-to-believe in what’s right in front of your face; the bigger-than and reach-out-and-touch-it — all of it, just at the tip of your fingers as you reach out… so close you can taste it ....more

52 Weeks of Brotherhood, Week 25

52 Weeks of Brotherhood, Week 25 The day they learned to boogie board… oh, the sheer joy. If I could have contained it, bottled it for the winter months that loom ahead, I would spoon feed it to them on the days when nothing is going right. Those days when having a brother is the worst ....more
