Re-Thinking Halloween

Last week, while browsing Walgreen’s pharmacy, I happened upon the Halloween section and spent some time looking around at what costumes were available for my children (both under two).Like in so many other areas of society, the options were extremely limiting. The girl’s outfits were almost all centered on beauty and sexuality, while the boys were either professional (i.e. doctor) or violent (a majority of the boy’s outfits included some kind of weapon).  Read more >

On Mentoring and the Fortune Most Powerful Women Summit

Today in Southern California, I join hundreds of successful, influential, and prominent female leaders for FORTUNE’s Most Powerful Women Summit. About Me:

An alumnus of both Stanford University and Stanford Business School, I worked in Africa, Latin America, and Europe on assignments with Conservation International to provide micro-enterprise opportunities for women.

Upon graduation from business school, I moved to Los Angeles where I performed in numerous films and TV shows. I formed Girls' Club Entertainment to develop and produce independent films with strong social, political, and cultural significance focused primarily on empowering women. My debut film, Miss Representation, was an official selection for the documentary competition at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival and has grown into a call-to-action campaign centered at www.missrepresentation.org

In addition to all of this, I served as First Lady of San Francisco until January 2011 when my husband, Gavin Newsom, was sworn in as Lieutenant Governor of California. We have one daughter and we're expecting a son later this year.
