Cold Turkey on Chicken Breasts

Could you and your family go for a whole month without consuming chicken breasts? Does the thought of that startle you, or even horrify you? Does it seem silly?  Read more >

It's always been about the parents, Jamie.

I want to love what Jamie Oliver is doing on “Food Revolution.” I really do. We’re on the same team. But I don’t.I was only able to stomach about three episodes of his first season. I think I might make it through the whole series this time, thanks to the opposition Jamie got from the Los Angeles Unified School District.Jamie is wasting his energies on the unmotivated. This made me absolutely crazy in the first season. Why spend so much time on people who really don’t even have the merest interest in the importance of diet and health to quality of life? Taking a morbidly obese, processed food junkie and trying to get him to buy and cook a pasture-raised chicken is absurd. It’s like expecting my kindergartener to read Nietzsche.  Read more >

Go Ahead. Don't Drink Your Milk.

A great friend of mine from Hinsdale called a few weeks ago.  She shared the buzz about who bought our old house.  We emptied our gripe-bags of winter illness war stories.  Then she changed the subject.“…so I also have a food question for you. I was reading your post about hot- no, very warm- cocoa and it got me thinking.  You know, Sarah [her 6-year-old] won’t drink milk.  So I give her chocolate milk instead- “  Read more >

Very Warm Cocoa

“Homemade” Hot Cocoa mesmerizes my kids’ playdates in the winter. “You mean your mom actually makes hot cocoa from scratch??!!” I love the illusion I can spin with homemade cocoa: kids think I am a genius super-mom. The word “homemade” implies work and care and effort. I sort of feel like I'm cheating:  what a ridiculously easy way to be a hero.  Read more >

About Me:

"Cook with courage. Eat with gratitude. Live with joy."  I write to educate and inspire parents who feel lifeless in the kitchen at readyprepgo.com.

I'm not healthy mommy.  Though she probably looks better in her yoga pants, she's a bore. I'm not 15-minute-meal mommy. Her craft closet is probably ready for a magazine spread at a moment's notice, but she just doesn't savor food.  I'm a mother of four young kids who loves food and is still learning to cook. I'm also witness to a rather fascinating experiment:  raise four kids on delicious, nutritious food and watch what happens. You can freak out your friends when you successfully bribe your three-year-old with "If you stop crying, I'll cut up a carrot for you." You can create wonderful, lasting family memories of culinary mishaps like "Brussels Sprouts with Lentils and Minted Yogurt." You can enjoy the pleasure of kids who will taste anything anywhere you go.
