My Daughter and the Dick Cheney Challenge

Dick Cheney

Today, I'm regretting raising well informed clever children. As I was driving my daughters and my older daughter's boyfriend to the Avengers last night, I went on a political rant, which is typical for me.My family has been ignoring me for years. My daughter's boyfriend, comes from a prominent Republican family here in town. Quietly he asked, "how many books written by Republicans have you read?" I was impressed with this question for two reasons: he remembered that I read a lot and he had the guts to ask it. I want my children's special friends to be gutsy, but not too gutsy.  Read more >

Sixteen Candles and the Busiest Weekend

Phew...I made it! In the Kraken house, May is the busiest month of the year, it's ten times worse than the Thanksgiving to New Year's rush. There are lots of reasons why, three kids three sports, major push in the gardens and the usual amount madness and mayhem. My Three Minute Fiction

NPR's Three Minute Fiction Round 8 winner was announced and it wasn't me! Periodically, National Public Radio runs a short story contest where a famous writer comes up with a writing prompt and you have to write a story of no more than 500 words. The stars aligned and I submitted an entry. Every entry had to begin with the sentence: she closed the book, placed it on the table, and finally, decided to walk through the door. Below is my story Will You Plant Lilacs for Me?  Read more >

About Me:

I'm a wife, I'm a mother, and in the dog-eat-dog world of family, sometimes I'm the Kraken!

What’s a Kraken? The Kraken is the sea monster from the movie, Clash of the Titans or in my house, mom when she gets mad. Yes, my family calls me the Kraken. I find being the Kraken refreshing and effective. As a communication tool, it gets the job done. They comply or make me laugh and forget why I’m mad in the first place.  We laugh a lot in my house.

I love to laugh and I do it often. Some might call my laugh, a guffaw, or too loud, or obnoxious.  I throw my head back and let it rip, loud and proud, it comes from deep within, from my belly and my heart. My laugh has silenced restaurants, turned heads and stopped traffic.  It’s as contagious as the stomach bug, you can’t be with me and not laugh, or at least smile.   I have no problem making fun of myself, it’s a daily occurrence, but I never make fun of anyone else, except my husband, and only when he deserves it, which is often. We’ve been together for 20 years, married for 17, so I have lots of material.  I call him The Rock because he’s mine and as dumb as one.

We have 3 kids, 15, 12 and 9, two girls and a boy.  We have a huge extended family and I have cadre of quirky friends.  They tell me great stories that make me, you guessed it, laugh.  Raising a family is what I do best and pretty much the only occupation I’ve ever wanted. I’ll get back to you if I discover any other skills.

I’m exceedingly typical. I love to read, I love to garden, I love to cook, I love to bake. I bake all of my own bread, and cook everything from scratch. I hate to clean and have a high tolerance for dirt, clutter and chaos.

Thanks for stopping by!
