New Kansas Law Could Allow Spanking of Children that Causes Redness and Bruising: Say What?

A few months ago, I was at a "mommy's night" house party with some women I don't know very well. As the wine flowed, so did the conversation, each of us bringing to the table our recent anecdotes, exciting stories and frustrations. At some point, one of the women started in on how much her children were annoying her lately. She related stories of back talk, open defiance and sibling in-fighting, and we all nodded our heads sympathetically. Then she said something that made my blood run cold: "My hand actually hurts from all the spankings I've had to give lately." ...more

My 7-year-old read the cover of our copy of Time magazine to me: "Why Mom Liked You Best*. The Science of Favoritism (*of course she would never admit it)."The cover features three blonde young children, a boy and two girls. Just like our family. Favorite girl has a big piece of cake with an even bigger smile on her face, while non-favored younger children have small pieces and rather grumpy faces....more

Is 2.9 Million Worth the World -- and Your Child -- Knowing You Would Have Rather Aborted?

Dear Mother in Portland, How do you tell your family and friends that you would have “aborted” your daughter? How do you sleep at night… knowing that they have all heard those words? Because you can’t say: “I want money because I would have aborted you,” and “But, I love you” in the same sentence. I’ve heard you try to say it, but you can’t. I hope this lawsuit is worth it....more
