The other day I was wondering about my great-grandmother and the land she came to Illinois to Homestead with her husband and eight kids. I have a photograph of the family in my office, all seated in their finest clothes around a buffalo hide rug. Mid 1800s. She looks like she could kick your ass if you were good enough for an ass kicking. If not, she’d just turn her boney Yankee shoulder to you and you would understand for the first time what it is to be on the receiving end of disdain. I wanted to know about my mothers. About Me: 

Hi, I'm Laura Munson and I'm a writer, speaker, and teacher. 

I've been writing novels, short stories, essays, and magazine articles for twenty years in the hills of Montana. 

In April of 2010 I finally had a book published.  THIS IS NOT THE STORY YOU THINK IT IS (Amy Einhorn/Putnam).  It's a dream come true.  National Book Tour.  "New York Times" bestseller list.  Book of the Month Club favorite.  International bestseller.  It's a book about empowerment in a time when society says you are a victim.  It's about finding emotional freedom in crisis.  It's about choosing to be happy. 

I have heard from so many people who want to apply this philosophy to their lives that I'm now speaking about it around the country, and I've started leading writing retreats in beautiful Montana.  It's an idyllic place to take a stand for your self-expression.  Here's more info.

To me, the writing life is really about sharing; helping people to not feel so alone, and returning to my desk each morning hoping to stay true to my author's statement which is:  I write to provide relief for myself and others. I'll be posting my blog links here and hoping to do just that.
