Taking Candy from Strangers

I recently took my daughter and her best friend to a park near our home.  Both girls are ten and in the 5th grade, so I felt comfortable letting them play while I sat on a nearby bench flipping through a magazine.  We weren't there long when I noticed my daughter on top of a high structure with a look of panic on her face and something hanging out of her mouth.  Read more >

Poking Holes in Condoms: the Story of How I Became a Mom

I snapped reading a novel with a pregnant character.  I got up and searched through my jewelry box for the pointiest pin I could find, grabbed the condoms and poked holes in them.  Just like the holes I felt inside of me. Looking at those holes in the silver wrapper was a big wake up call for me.  I hid the condoms under tissues in the bathroom garbage can and sobbed.  I'd been hiding my feelings for so long.  Read more >

The Day I Met My Daughter

I wrote this the day we met the Princess, age 9 at the time.  We waited six months from being chosen to be her parents to bringing her home.  We weren't allowed any contact with us during that time.  She found out about us approximately two weeks before our arrival.  Our first meeting was our first contact, other than a photo album and letter from us that she was given the day she was told about the adoption.  She had two failed adoptions and 13 (known) placements prior to us.  We met her on Monday and she was with us permanently starting that Friday.   Read more >

About Me:

Married to my very own Mr. Wonderful for 11 years.  Mom to a ten year old girlie-girl.   She, hubby and I became a forever family in 2010 through the gift of adoption.  She has a background of grief and trauma and we are all working hard to heal the pieces of her that got broken through the failings of other adults.  I work in nonprofit (social services/early childhood education).  I recently completed a masters degree and am thinking of going right back to school!  On top of working full time at a challenging job, raising a child with special emotional needs, being a wife to a man who struggles with anxiety issues and general life.  I think that makes me crazy!   Oh, and I'm on a weight loss journey.   I've been overweight since I was a preschooler reaching a high of 361 pounds.   I've lost about 75 of that and counting.  I struggle with emotional eating and have deal with binge eating disorder (as well as a short struggle with purging).  We live in Florida and have two crazy cats - one little (kitten) and one big.
