Leah Spring

I'm an over 40 mom to a slew of boys and one teenage girl. My 5 big boys are all on their own now (and I'm a grandma x4!) but my four youngest kids are still at home. My blog is predominately about raising these youngest four, who all have Down syndrome. Other topics include International Adoption (three of my boys are from Serbia) dogs, motorcycling, and just living life!

Little Tips and Tricks to Get My Kids Out the Door for School

This time of year is tough for us in our house. Summer school is done. The kids are SO over playing in the sprinkler and going to the library. Every day Axel says at breakfast, "School today tomorrow." Angela asks, "How many days until school starts?" about 37,245 times per day. Here it is kids!!! ...more

Do You Let Your Child Hug Just Anyone?

Do you have a child with Down Syndrome who just loves to hug -- everybody and anybody? Do you let them? Despite knowing it's a stereotype, Leah at Garden of Eagan sees the predisposition to hug as a danger for her children and yours. She has been teaching her kids that "hugs are for family, handshakes are for friends." How do you deal with this issue? ...more

So I Posted Photos of My Kid Online and This is Where They Ended Up

And somewhere along the way, strangers started tuning in. Which was cool. I started to make connections with people going through the same struggles I was. This blogging thing was SO! SO! FUN! Now, I wasn't totally naive. I knew there were weirdos trolling the internet. And I've never hit POST without first considering what I was putting out there for the world to see. No last names, no nudity, no addresses or specifics. ...more

My Kid Gets His Potty Mouth from Me

"Damn!", he says while looking out of the side of his eyes at me to see if there is a reaction. And there is. But I can tell by the slight sag in his shoulders that the reaction isn't as big as he had hoped. "Pardon me?", I say calmly. So calmly. I've learned, over the years, that my child, this child, is always on a mission to stir the pot. If he can make you cry, or yell, or emote in any way, he is a happy boy. He will laugh over your tears. It's an obnoxious trait, however that's not the point here....more

Family Support for our New Niece

As we celebrated our daughter's return home following surgery (she had skull surgery due to a condition called craniosyntosis), we looked forward to finding out whether we would be having a niece or nephew in September. My BIL and SIL would be finding out the gender of their baby and we were pumped. What came next was a shock to say the least....more

The Gross, Disgusting, Icky Trouble with Fall

Fall is absolutely my favorite season. I love the crisp air, the sights and smells, the anticipation of the holidays to come, the feeling that new things are coming. Ahhh, I love it. There's nothing better than sitting down with something pumpkin-flavored or enjoying something that smells or tastes like apples, whether you're watching your kids play outside or at a local high school football game. That being said, I do have one gripe with fall....more

A Stranger Picked Up My Child and Walked Away

And then it happened. A total stranger picked up my child. She didn't ask. In fact, she TOOK him from me. I'm standing there holding Asher's hand as he danced next to me, while with my other hand I was recording Angela and Axel dancing. I was HOLDING his hand. I thought Dean had picked him up, only turned to find a total stranger had not only picked up my child, but was walking away with him....more
