The Best Part of BlogHer '09

I'm in the main lobby of the Sheraton Chicago Hotel and Towers, just minutes away from the Closing Keynote. Afterwards, I'll go up to my room, pack my bags, and head out of Chicago on a train that will deliver me home sometime tomorrow. My head is spinning, my stomach is empty, my heart is full and my ears are buzzing with the excitement, activity, and energy of over a thousand women passing by me on the escalators, the hallways and the elevators.  Read more >

What I want from BlogHer '09: a few good bloggers (104 would be nice)

As a professional writer/blogger who covers the very broad topic "women's issues" (and ranks #1 on Google, Bing and Yahoo searches for that term) I've tried to make it a priority to guide readers to emerging women's voices in the blogosphere. And here's the problem: So many blogs, so little time. So many important issues covered, so little attention paid to so many spirited and engaging opinions. Finding really good yet relatively unknown blogs is half the battle.  Read more >

What Took So Long? Media Coverage of BlogHer 08

I didn't attend BlogHer 08 so I felt sheepish writing about it in my blog today. Yet there are a number of women (yes, really there are) who still don't know about BlogHer, so I felt it was my duty. When I began to surf in search of BlogHer 08 coverage, I remembered why I didn't write about it right after the conference ended. There was virtually no mainstream media coverage that I could link to.  Read more >

Girls Like Us

I always dreamed of writing a book when I grew up. Well I'm there (grown up) and haven't written a book (that'll come when my daughters go off to college) but I do get to write book reviews and articles about authors who write books.  Read more >

About Me:

I was a mother of two toddlers when I received a diagnosis of ovarian cancer at age 33. As a survivor, I felt that this was my chance at a 'do-over' of my life, and I vowed to embrace whatever came along.

Since that moment in 1994, I changed careers and became a radio/television producer and talk show host. For nearly a decade, I focused on women's issues until I changed careers again, and landed a dream job writing about Women's Issues for About.com, a New York Times Company-owned website.

So many good things have come my way in this do-over: two Clarion Awards from Women in Communications for Best Women's Issues Programming, and most recently, a 2009 EMMA (Exceptional Merit in Media Award) from the National Women's Political Caucus.

Because I'm Japanese American and grew up as a Jewish American Princess, I've been jokingly called a JapJap. I see myself as a 'banana' - yellow on the outside and white on the inside - and if I ever write a memoir, that's what I'll call it.

My greatest accomplishment? My two teenage daughters who are feminists through and through.
