Blogging must go on

Things I've learned from daily blogging: Sometimes it's tempting to just quit when life gets busy and strained.  I'm tired and feeling stretched a little thin.  Therefore, I can post another empty meaningless blog, or I can not do it at all. I made a commitment to do it, so I choose the former.  Goodnight all!   ...more

Too soon for Christmas tunes?

Are you listening to Christmas music already?  A local radio station began playing it before Halloween here.   I saw that someone had lights strung all around their house two weeks ago--also well before Halloween.  I just don't like Christmas taking over the fall holidays.  I don't want to see Thanksgiving get lost in all the buying frenzy.  I try to avoid looking at the seasonal merchandise that's in the stores already.  It puts me in an anti-Christmas spirit to see stuff out so soon. ...more

One thing I'd change about myself

One thing?  Are you kidding?  That's like deciding which daughter is my favorite.  There are several things I'd change about myself,  if the changes didn't require so much daggone work.  But there is this one thing.  I would become a better finisher.  I'm a great starter.  I love to dream and plan and make goals, but I'm not great at following through.  I think I'm getting better, but I still see room for improvement.    ...more

Evoking home

I'm probably nuts, but I'm gonna give it another shot.  I either attempted or completed the National Blog Posting Month challenge the past two years, and I have the itch to try it again.   Never mind that I've already spent approximately 50 hours staring at a computer screen this week.  Never mind that my mind is numb after production day is done at the paper on Tuesdays. One of the daily prompts said to post a picture that evokes home for you....more

Less dutiful, or smarter?

I've had a busy, long and tiring day.  It's the day before production day at the small weekly newspaper where I work, and I'm putting the finishing touches on a long feature about two Vietnam War veterans.  I want to do their stories justice.  These men did their duty to their country, and neither of them said they regretted it, not that they had much choice at the time.   They were so young when they served.  I wonder if their sense of patriotic duty is dead to today's young men and women?   ...more

Chicken man

The leaves hung on longer than usual this year, but the wind and rain stripped many of them away the last day or two.   Still, there are enough bright ones left to make the hills beautiful. I drove to a place called Crowe Hollow today, where I was told that the last man hung in Estill County on the court house square once lived there....more

Cowboy Clay...for a little bit

Cowboy Clay didn't want to wear his cowboy hat...or his cowboy boots...or carry his six-shooter, but he was still stinkin' cute when we took him out trick-or-treating tonight. ...more

Considering a new direction

Today wraps up another month of posting for National Blog Posting Month. I started strong, but I missed a few posts.  Still, I managed to blog more than two-thirds of the days of November. I enjoy blogging, but I’m considering making some changes. I think my range of topics is too broad. I’ve always heard if you aim at nothing (in particular), you’re sure to hit it.Most advice I’ve read for bloggers says “find a niche,” so I’ve been thinking of narrowing my focus for this blog to food. Why? ...more
