About Me: 

Lisa Wade is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Occidental College, a private, liberal arts school in Los Angeles, California.  She teaches Introduction to Sociology, Race and Ethnicity in American Society, Gender and Society, Controversial Issues in Sexuality, and Power and Sexuality.  She was recently granted the Early Career Award for Innovation in Teaching Sociology from the Pacific Sociological Association.  You can visit her faculty page here.

Her research involves, most generally, the relationship between social inequality and the body, especially as sexuality becomes a marker of difference and an arena of social control.  Her most recent academic article, Defining Gendered Oppression in U.S. Newspapers: The Strategic Value of ‘Female Genital Mutilation’”, was published by the journal Gender and Society (2009).  For more, see her curriculum vitae.

Before receiving her Ph.D. in sociology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Lisa earned an M.A. in human sexuality from New York University.
