What We Don't Talk About When We Talk About "Breadwinner Moms"

Women and work are making headlines again. This past week, the news channels have all been flooded with the latest research from the Pew Research Center—a non-partisan fact tank that releases surveys and research analysis on American issues, and a benchmark source for information on changes in our society. Their latest report, released yesterday, found that a full 40 percent of American women are the "breadwinners" in their households....more

What Exactly IS the Average Sized Woman?

This post has been in my head for a few months now. Thanks to Bren over at My Girly Parts for reminding me to get it out. What size do you consider to be “average” when it comes to women? 4? 6? 10? 12? 14? First, let’s look at the definition of “average” according to Wikipedia: ...more
Average almost seems to be irrelevant.  When you line 10 women up who are all a size 12 (for ...more

When Mommy Isn't a Good Listener

I was an epic failure of a mother today. And my kid was a pain in the butt. “Max, I need you to be a good listener in the bookstore. You can play in the playhouse, or at the train table. If you start to run around the store, that tells me you’re ready to leave.” I ended up grabbing him by the arm, somewhere between the monkey books and the robot toys. He was running through the maze of aisles. He wouldn’t walk to the bathroom. He wanted to wash his hands before and after he went potty, but he wanted to cover the faucet with his palm so that the water sprayed everywhere....more

Dear Sports Illustrated, Ethnic People Aren't Props for Your Swimsuit Issue

The Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue is on newsstands now, which means it's time for the annual outcry against the way the magazine objectifies women. But this year, there's a second outcry -- against the magazine's decision to set the bikini-clad models against the backdrop of exotic-looking Asian and African people (people!) in native garb. ...more

On Absolutes and Ending Up Where You're Meant To Be

There have been many moments in my life when I recognized that I was standing at a crossroads. Going one way would change my life, going another way would keep it the same. Not moving was something else entirely. I have made choices and then looked back and fretted, "Did I make the right decision?" ...more

3 Things I Swore I Would Never Do As a Parent (and Have Already Done)

I remember it so vividly, those days before baby. I remember sitting in bed with my husband chatting about what it would be like when our little one arrived. We joked about the ridiculous things other parents did and laughed about how silly they were. We didn’t read any parenting books in advance because we were convinced that it would all “come naturally” and we would just know what to do. It all seemed so simple. Well, six months in and it is just as my mother said, “Being a parent is the hardest job you’ll ever love.” That being said, I have fully eaten my words when I said I wouldn’t do certain things once the baby was born....more

Debunking the "Terrible Teen" Myth: I Love Teenagers

If every parent of cherubic toddlers had a nickel for every time some well-meaning person chuckled and said, "Just wait until they're teenagers!," those parents would still be annoyed, but they'd also be filthy rich. For whatever reason, there is nothing more-seasoned parents love to do to new(ish) parents than warn them that someday, their beautiful babies will be teens -- and the implication is that this is a fate worse than death. ...more

They Are the Best of Kids; They Are the Worst of Kids

There are some things that set me off. I lose my temper and I say mean things. Last night in the car with both kids, L screamed. She has a scream worthy of a slasher film, and it pierces my skull. She screams when she's happy, when she's mad, or just for fun, like in the car last night. I yelled at her to stop (yes, I see the correlation), and told her that screaming and yelling in the car can distract the driver, who could get in an accident, and we could all die. That's right. I told my my three-year-old that her screaming could actually kill us....more
Love this! Honest, hysterical, and completely relatable.more

Do You Want Guns in Schools? The NRA Does

After a week of what was thought to be respectful, even remorseful, silence on the Sandy Hook Elementary School mass shootings, the NRA took to the podium this morning, with… shall we say, both barrels blazing. National Rifle Association leader Wayne LaPierre addressed the media in Washington D.C. with the message that the only way to keep our children safe is to put armed security guards in schools....more
