Once again, I am seeing a lot of posts about kids. Specifically, I'm seeing all sorts of kid hating on Facebook. Like this gem...
It seems that this happens every winter, so let's think about that for a second. It's winter. I'll wait because it's winter and we are all suffering some polar vortex cabin fever and all that... oh wait!
On Sunday, photos were published showing celebrity chef Nigella Lawson being grabbed on the throat by her husband. The photos splashed over the internet showed him holding her by the throat and her leaving the restaurant in tears. It should come as no surprise that this story caught my attention. Ten years working with women escaping domestic violence leaves its mark on a person. I will always be a victim advocate even if I am no longer in the field....more
I read a lot of parenting related stuff online. I like to find cool things to do with the kids on Pinterest or research the latest information available about childhood health. I have spent a lot of time on breastfeeding forums and met amazing women doing amazing things in the world of parenting. I am so grateful for those relationships I have formed. I've made true friends right here on the webternet. Like-minded women and mom friends. Good stuff....more
This is a big week. The Supreme Court of The United States is hearing arguments this week to determine the constitutionality of Proposition 8 and the Defense of Marriage act. People (including me) are fired up on both sides.Try mentioning marriage equality on Facebook and see what happens. Better yet go to some of the pages dedicated to it and start reading the comments. Inevitably you find people fighting about whether or not gay people are born gay and what the bible says or doesn't say about it. But guess what?...more
The greatest compliment I ever received about being a mother came before Mr. Pants was ever born. I wrote about it here. It was my brother telling me that it was a good thing that I was having a boy. This post is inspired by that and by the recent convictions of two teenage boys in Steubenville, Ohio. I started thinking about the lessons I want to teach my son. How can I guide him so that he is a good man?...more
It's been on my mind a lot this week. 2013 is brand new and it brings with it those promises we all love to make to ourselves. I've started to think about my body. Just like I do every single year at this time. I think about how I want to treat it better and be healthier. How I want to be nicer to myself when I'm inside of my head chatting away. These are good things, of course. But then something inevitably happens....more
Sometimes mama doesn't know best. Sometimes I am completely off the mark. Where Mr. Pants is concerned this happens on occasion (OK it happens a lot). Luckily for us, we have Daddy Pants. I have written before that Daddy understands Mr. Pants on a level that no one else can get too. See, I'm an indoor kid and sometimes do not understand their silly reindeer games....more
Well here we are. It's Trick-or-Treat soon and it's disgusting out. Here in Ohio, it's raining and freezing cold and muddy and gross. I've got two kiddies under three, so the best part of trick-or-treat was always going to be running outside and swinging a pumpkin bucket. And you know what? Some kids are just skeeved out by talking to strangers or putting on a costume (I'm talking to you, Mr. Pants). So even though Trick-or-Treat is pretty much the most amazing night of many school age kids' lives, some littles can take it or leave it.
If you are discouraged about the Frankenstorm ruining all your fun or you have a kiddo that would rather be duct taped to the floor than go up to other people's houses (both!), let me give you a few ideas!...more
