Break the Blogging Rules

It showed up as a meme on various blogs: writing advice by Elmore Leonard. Writing advice tends to pop up on blogs, the artistic medium of choice for those who like to play with words. I am drawn to these lists like spiders seeking warm rooms in winter.  Who knows when someone will discover the magic key that unlocks novels, or figure out a way to make a positive post (that does not contain baby animals) go viral every single time?  But so far, I've left every single list of Blogging Dos and Don't or Ten Best Writing Tips with the same thought: Break the rules. ...more

5 Parenting Vows I'm Sticking To After Watching HBO's "Girls"

I'm transfixed by Lena Dunham and her friends on HBO's Girls. These self-absorbed, generally very unlikeable, and deeply flawed girls captivate me. However, as a feminist, as a GenX-er, as a woman whose twenties aren't in that distant in the past, I mostly want to scream at each of the girls,"What are you thinking?" 'Girls' courtesy of HBO ...more
I wish I could totally agree, but I'm a huge Girls fan and see the flip side to the piece. ...more

A Birthday on Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is coming, but instead of being enthusiastic about  the holiday itself, I'm excited about celebrating my daughters' birthday; born five years ago on Thanksgiving day, 2007.It was a wild ride – pregnancy with twins; months of bed rest, nervous ultrasounds, undetermined blood tests. Especially after several losses. The fact that my turkeys arrived on Thanksgiving day was like a gift from the stars. It came with a message. This is what is said:...more

Men. What's Not to Love?

I was recently accused of being a man-hater. The ill-informed accuser had confused my independence and comfort in being alone with a more sinister point of view. The truth, however, is so far from the allegation that in my defense I thought a written piece regarding the absurdity was warranted. I love men. I'm not saying I understand them completely. They are as complicated as complicated comes....more

Pay to Promote Your Status Comes to Facebook

There have been more changes at Facebook as of late, and people have had a lot to say about the new pay-to-promote system which is currently in testing mode. Not Super... Just Mom has a post about both the sponsored content showing up in her feed as well as noticing that views to her status updates have dropped perhaps because she is not paying to have her words read. Though she also raises the other fair point -- what Facebook is essentially doing is asking people to pay to advertise their words, just as any brand would pay for advertising to get knowledge of their product to the consumer. ...more

Real-Life Erotica: Diary of a Submissive

When I look back at 2012, I may very well remember it as the year everyone seemed to discover erotica. I've been reading romance book blogs for years, so I've always been a bit aware of what was happening in the world of erotica, but this year, it went mainstream. While it's been great to see readers expanding their literary circles, nonfiction erotica hasn't been as fully explored as fiction. Enter Diary of a Submissive, the true life history of Sophie Morgan. ...more

You Don't Have to Be Friends with the Whole Internet

I've been blogging for 11 years. Friends have come and gone, amicably and not so, over the years. Sometimes the friendship doesn't even end; it's thrown into a hiatus because of offline life happenings. Sometimes people stop blogging. Sometimes you're demoted. Misunderstandings abound on the Internet, straining and ending friendships without the ability to look each other in the eye and apologize, accept forgiveness. The beginning and ending of friendships on the Internet is a given. It happens. We move on. But what about those people that you don't want to be friends with in the first place? ...more

Picking Battles: A Fashion Fight on Picture Day

I kept the girls home from picture day yesterday. The drama that ensued over what to wear became much too much; screaming and crying and clothes tossing and hysterics over matching tights to dresses to shoes. While all of their friends were having their photos taken, my daughters sat in their room with their lunch boxes while I huffed and puffed; would have blown this place down had I been able to find the lung power. I'd love to say that it was all them, but it wasn't....more
