The Journey of a thousand miles...

...begins with 30 minutes of gimpy steps. Today is National Start! Walking Day, and - while I may be hobbling this first day (and possibly the next few) - I'll be out there. My mother, father, brother and sister all had heart problems before they died, and a day doesn't go by when I don't think of my nephew's dark humor at his mother's December funeral, asking who was planning on dying next year.  Read more >

My dear sweet sister Mary died on December 10th. After our mother died in 2001, Mary was the closest thing I had to a mother. I am the youngest of nine children, and, although I still have several living siblings, this loss - especially so close to the holidays - has been very hard to bear. I remember Mary as a fiercely independent woman who loved to truly experience life, travel, have adventures, and had a marvelously demented sense of humor. My Mother Had Wings

I read a blog entry the other day written by a young woman who said she didn't believe in heroes. That the only person you should have to look up to is yourself. Hogwash, I say. (And awfully narcissistic, to boot.) Meet my hero - my mom: Out at the Castor homestead.  Read more >

About Me:

Hello! I'm Merujo, and I've been blogging for 5+ years on my site, Church of the Big Sky (aka www.merujo.com) with 120,000 hits and counting! I'm a 44-year-old fat chick, living on the paycheck-to-paycheck razor blade of a non-profit life, while trying to keep my creative self alive, vibrant, and growing.  I'm a freelance writer, commentator for Washington DC's NPR station, WAMU, a sometimes witty raconteur, Russian historian, world traveler, and grants guru for one of the coolest non-profit media organizations on the planet. Blogging saved my life in 2005, and now it's an extension of who I am. My first major market magazine feature comes out in Smithsonian's Air & Space magazine in August 2010 - all about my mother, who was a WASP in WWII.
