A Paperwhite Pep Talk

OK, I post about this every year, but really, they're so easy--if you enjoy fresh flowers there's really no reason not to plant a few paperwhites.  Read more >

Small Travels, Small Travelers

I was picking up some lawn debris in the garden this evening, when I noticed a pack of baby snails had taken up residence in my bucket.  I don't see enough snails to worry about them trashing the place, so I didn't feel it was necessary to hurt the wee beasties.  But I did carefully pull them out of my bucket to observe them for a few minutes.  Read more >

Suspicious Vegetable Makes Good (Pasta Sauce)

Just when I had earned some measure of trust with my Sweet Husband on the veggie-cooking front (see here for the Brussels-sprouty-back story) I had to go and try to make peas a few weeks ago.  Never mind that they were oniony and buttery, never mind that I even threw in a handful of Parmesan cheese for good measure--peas they  Read more >

About Me:

My blog began several years ago when I decided I wanted to learn how to grow things. After about the first year, I lost my battle with the temptation to include other aspects of my life, so now it's a little bit of everything I do--family, crafty stuff, dogs, plants, cooking, and whatever else happens to tickle my fancy on any given day.  Frequently mentioned characters are my Sweet Husband and two dogs Moe and Porterhouse.

I garden at home--in a great big planter box and wherever else I can stick plants that our lawn mower man won't whack them down--and in a community garden down the street.  (The community garden is also known as the Burrow garden, see the story here.)  For you fellow gardeners who care about such things, I'm in Zone 5b.

Other important bits?

In my grown-up life I'm a public defender. That means I get to help people a lot of other people would rather pretend just don't exist. Which I love doing. That colors my viewpoint on a lot of things, as does the fact that I'm a fairly liberal girl. (I also think it's important to have my biases out in the open.)

My goals in life include learning all the words to the song "La Vie Boheme" from "Rent", and getting a pair of chickens to make me nice, fresh eggs each day.  I work on the first one anytime I'm alone in my car.  The second will have to wait until we have just a little more space outside.
