Far Too Many People Have Been Hurt by Good Intentions

They say there's no such thing as a dumb question, but that's not true. There is such a thing as a dumb question. "When are you guys going to start your family?" "Are you going to try for a girl?" "Are you pregnant yet?" "Shouldn't you be working on baby number two by now?" They're all dumb questions. Unless you know the story, it's really none of your business. You shouldn't ask....more

How My Children Make Me Pay Attention More During Prayer and Worship

Unfortunately though this is compelling, and I think, very true and necessary -- the imperative to embrace the darkness and quiet because of its being conducive to God's presence...it's just not feasible anymore. One of four things happen when I close my eyes, particularly for prayer: 1) I start snoring. 2) I start daydreaming. 3) I start writing lists. 4) The babies run away and/or fall off a pew (namely, in church on Sundays). terror as teaching moments?

as a mom, I'm finding my parenting beliefs and concepts challenged and changing on a daily basis. I'm thinking harder about what parenting is and how much of it we do out of habit without taking the time to analyze the 'whys' behind our children's behavior and our own reactions. this is especially the case with discipline. I'm realizing that I hate some of the things we as a society reflexively do to control our kids, much of which involves using terror as teaching moments. ...more
