In Which I Try to Explain My Feminism in Under a Gazillion Words

It has been brought to my attention that my disparaging comments about The Man in my post about loving Kirtsy may be perceived as general man-bashing, so I'd like to set things right.  Read more >

The Most Difficult Discussion You Never Want to Have

Thanks to the post put up yesterday by Tara at If Mom Says Okay, I put aside the thinky post I was working on for today, in order to work to write this instead. It's a painful story that leads to a horribly difficult but, I think, important topic. I write this in the hopes that awareness may prevent some other little girl from falling victim to silence.  Read more >

About Me:
I am a 30-something mother of two -- Son, five, and Daughter, three. I am a literature professor who is lucky enough to be on campus three-days a week and home with the kids two days a week. Sometimes those two days seem like the very very best parts of my week. Other times, they seem to last a whole week each. I admire any full-time-at-home mama who doesn't go nuts from the "hilarious" repetition of the word "butt" and the incessant requests to draw Spiderman. In my alternative visions of my life (not that this version isn't great, mind you), I am one of the following: - an Olympic ice-skater - an architect who never has to do boring technical drawings but just gets to design fabulous things all the time - a fabulously successful actress who is actually taken seriously and who looks really great in cranberry-colored silk charmeuse I started blogging because I wanted some more regular connection to new ideas and grownups who could help keep me balanced on my this-day-has-lasted-at-least-a-week-and-it's-not-even-naptime-yet days. You can find me posting almost daily at http://mommysmartini.blogspot.com.
