Meatless Monday: One-Pot Wonder Tomato Basil Pasta

This recipe for One-Pot Wonder Tomato Basil Pasta from my friend Donna at Apron Strings has been shared and pinned over and over since Donna posted it, so I probably should apologize for being so slow to feature it here. But now that you know about it, don't miss the chance to make this couldn't-be-easier meatless pasta dish for a Meatless Monday dinner. ...more
I made this last night (with a bunch of additions) and it was great. I added a can of white ...more

The 10 Worst Prom Dresses of 2014

Scrolling through some popular prom dress sites today, I witnessed crimes against fashion, not to mention propriety. I saw perfectly adorable trends like peplums, neons, ruffles, and pastels massacred in cold blood. I saw highly dubious trends like Dynasty-esque beading, cutouts, ruffles, and the inexplicable (to me, anyway) pageant-ish ballgown look cross the line from tasteless to felonious. And—oh, the humanity—THE COST. Yes, cold hard cash is the motive for these crimes. ...more

Nancy Kerrigan & Tonya Harding: 20 Years Later

The recent announcement that Ashley Wagner was named to the U.S. figure skating team was big news. But outside the rink, the controversy over the choice of Wagner over fellow skater Mirai Nagasu barely caused a ripple. This was nothing like the Tonya Harding/Nancy Kerrigan figure skating scandal 20 years ago  --  a scandal that ESPN named  as one of its most memorable sports moments of the 20th century....more

US Olympic Skaters: American Doesn't Mean White, Or Does It?

My Son Loves My Little Pony, but Do We Have to Call Him a Brony?

For months, I’ve been purchasing the My Little Pony figurines for my daughter, Samara, who is two-years-old. One day Ari, my five-year-old, wanted to watch a show on Netflix and he spotted the My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic picture featuring six colorful ponies with enormous anime character eyes. I figured I’d give the show a try, not knowing if it would hold his attention. As it turned out, after the first episode he was hooked. “Mommy, can I hold the ponies while I watch it?” He asked. “Sure.” I said with a shrug. ...more

It's All Sweet Until You Hit Level 350 on Candy Crush

You didn't think I was going to write every day in November without at least one post about Candy Crush, did you? It would probably be impossible. Especially when I have been stuck on a level for what feels like forever, and I have to talk about it with someone who will really care. Or someone whose eyes I can't see rolling as the words Candy Crush leave my lips. ...more

I Bought My Son a Cleveland Indians Cap: Am I Failing to Teach Him About Racism?

When I was in high school, our sports teams were called the Indians, and our mascot was a noble looking head of a Native American.  Because we were the Indians, we felt a special connection to native people, even using an Iroquois word on our yearbook . At some point in time between when I graduated from high school and my twenty year reunion, my school changed the name to the Eagles.  I was pissed. I thought it was stupid pandering to overly sensitive liberals who probably weren't even Native Americans to begin with. I just didn't get it....more
