The Psychological Underpinnings of Submission & Domination

Has spanking gone mainstream? asks Katie Roiphe in a Newsweek cover story in response to all the hype around the Twilight fanfiction slash "mommy porn" bestseller Fifty Shades of Grey. Roiphe notes the coincidence of this trend of women eagerly consuming fantasies of submission at a time when women are "in hard economic terms" less subjugated or dependent by men than before.  Read more >

What Feminist Porn Can Do for You

Psychotherapist Stanley Siegel claims that your favorite porn says a lot about who you are. I'm sure that's true, but the way he presents his case about those who watch porn makes me as a feminist woman who watches porn feel like his claims and statements about porn watching people has nothing to do with me.  Read more >

Quickies and Vibrators Make for Happy Parents

Of 10,000 new parents surveyed by Babytalk, 66 percent report they were happy with their pre-baby sex life; only 24 percent are happy with their post-baby sex life. In response, sex educator Ian Kerner at Good in Bed advocates "the art of the quickie:"  Read more >

witches and yogis: lining up my people in times of trouble

"In times of trial and tribulations, I line up my line of people," mused my therapist in last week's session. She went on listing sever spiritual leaders, some poets and a few philosophers. About Me:

Anne G. Sabo, Ph.D., also known as Quizzical mama, is a former academic turned public educator, author, speaker, freelance writer, and mama- and sex blogger. My book on progressive feminist porn After Pornified: How Women Are Transforming Pornography & Why It Really Matters is forthcoming from Zero Books this fall. I am also finishing a book on sleep parenting based on interviews with moms (The Sleep Question). I am a regular contributor to Good Vibrations Magazine, the online magazine for one of the oldest sex-positive female oriented sex shops in the US, and I am a frequently featured member at BlogHer, the largest community of women who blog with 25+ million unique visitors per month.

As a college professor for ten years, I taught courses on literature, film- and women's studies. Since leaving a tenured & promoted academic position, I have founded Love, Sex, and Family, a resource site devoted to progressive human sexuality information, featuring articles, news, book- and film reviews, and more as it pertains to our sexual lives in the broadest sense.

In my New porn by women blog, I write about sexual politics and feminist porn. My Quizzical mama blog is an educated and personal approach to the politics and philosophies of parenting, often addressing controversial issues and reflecting on different cultural values and practices in the US and my native Norway. I live in Northfield, Minnesota, a small college town just south of the Twin Cities, with my husband and our toddler daughter.
