Sandra Hovatter

I’ve been pursuing God for more than 30 years! Wow! I didn’t really think I was that old! Ok, so I’m 50-something, I’m married to the greatest guy around  and I’m passionate about Christ. I have an MA in Christian Ministries from Malone University and am an ordained minister.  (Yes, I could use the title Reverend, but it’s not usually my style.)

I’ve been involved in ministry in one way or another for almost all of the 30+ years I’ve known Christ. I am a teacher, speaker and author.

Take Hold of Eternal Life (in This Life) in 2010

11But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. 12Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses. 1 Timothy 6: 11-12...more

Grumbling at Miracles in the Making - Let's Not!

Rules, Religion & Relationship

As I read through the book of Matthew, particularly chapters 5 through 9, I am struck by how easy it is to fall into establishing expectations about God and about how others should act if they know God. The Pharisees get a bad rap among Christians, and perhaps rightly so…somewhat. You see, if I were there, when Jesus was here on earth, I’m not altogether sure that I wouldn’t have sided with the Pharisees a fair amount of the time! ...more

Resting at the River's Edge - Be Encouraged and February Reading Plan

It’s January 31st. In my personal reading, following our Resting at the River’s Edge reading plan, I am on January 29th! I share that with you all to encourage you. Over the past three weeks I’ve been behind or ahead of the plan half a dozen times probably! And that’s OK. The plan is a guide, but don’t let it become a hindrance to enjoying God’s Word. Don’t let it cause you to read through a passage just to get through it or to give the enemy ammunition to heap guilt on you when you fall behind. This is a guilt-free zone! ...more

We Don't Have a Clue...

The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!”                 Matthew 8:27 The disciples had been with Jesus. They had seen Him heal the man with leprosy, the Centurian’s servant, and Peter’s mother-in-law. ...more

Here, Now, Working to Fulfill His Promises to Me

One of my favorite verses in the whole Bible is Genesis 28:16 — When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, “Surely the LORD is in this place, and I was not aware of it.”            Genesis 28:16 It just reminds me that I am so often unaware that God is with me, but he surely is. How very sad that I miss Him, ...more

Living in Community - Actions Have Consequences

In Genesis 12, Abraham lied about Sarah, telling the Egyptians that she was his sister. The king of Egypt, the Pharaoh, took Sarah into his harem. God sent a terrible plague on Pharaoh’s entire household. In Genesis 20, Abraham lied about Sarah, telling the Gerarites that she was his sister. The king of Gerar, Abimelech, took Sarah as one of his wives. God came to Abimelech in a dream and warned him that he would die if he kept Sarah as his wife because she was already the wife of Abraham. ...more

Shut In & Remembered

On that very day Noah and his sons, Shem, Ham and Japheth, together with his wife and the wives of his three sons, entered the ark…The animals going in were male and female of every living thing, as God had commanded Noah. Then the LORD shut him in.But God remembered Noah and all the wild animals and the livestock that were with him in the ark, and he sent a wind over the earth, and the waters receded.  ...more

Forgetting What is Behind and Straining for What is Ahead

Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.      Philippians 3:13-14 The Apostle Paul’s words provide great content for meditation on New Year’s Day. “Lord, help me to forget what is behind and strain toward what is ahead. Help me to press on toward the goal with purpose and faith.” ...more
