What is the criteria for being a "good" dog-owner?

This is a question I've been thinking about seriously in the past couple of days. My husband and I want to adopt a dog. But we are both full-time workers who have 10-12 hour work days. Yes, undeniably it won't be fair for the dog.But on the other hand, I can guarantee that I'd be a good loving owner who will be spending a lot of time with the dog from Friday to Sunday.
