Women Journalists Deeply Disappoint in One-Sided Coverage of Breast Implants

On the last day of Women’s History Month, my pride and pleasure in this celebration was diminished by the appearance of an article in Newsweek Magazine by two women journalists at the top of their profession, journalists who until now have always done wonderful work on women’s health issues.  Read more >

Priscilla Presley’s Face Injected With Industrial-Grade Silicone: What So Easily Happens When a Medical Procedure Becomes Trendy

From Pam Noonan-Saraceni “My friends have done it and rave about it.” “My friends look great, and it looks so easy.” “Everyone is doing it, so it MUST BE SAFE.” “I’m going to get it done too...” This is the thinking process for so many people when it comes to cosmetic surgery. It leaves a lot of room for terrible things to happen. Case in point is Priscilla Presley, who ended up with with industrial-grade silicone in her face.  Read more >

An Open Letter to Dan Savage

Dear Mr. Savage, I read your response to I Miss Her Boobs with dismay. You were honest in your inability to give good advice, but your answer rested on the assumption that this is just a sexual/cosmetic/emotional issue, when in fact it could be one of pure survival - the wife not wanting to extend the life-and-death struggle that all cancer patients go through.

About Me:
My name is Sybil Goldrich, and I blog at the Beauty and the Breast blog. I have been one of the leading consumer advocates involved in the fight for women’s health as it relates to breast implants. My leadership on this issue began in 1987 when, as a cancer patient having massive difficulties with implants for reconstruction after bi-lateral mastectomies, I uncovered the fact that breast implants had never been approved by the FDA. My article on the subject, “Restoration Drama,” was published in Ms. magazine in June of 1988. As a result of that article, I began to hear from women around the country. I co-founded Command Trust Network, an information clearing house for women to provide facts that were difficult and often impossible to get elsewhere about breast implants and silicone. I actively worked to educate the press so that correct information about implants and related problems would be disseminated. I also worked closely with Congressman Ted Weiss (D, NY) who, before his death, chaired the House Subcommittee with oversight of the FDA. Since then, I have testified countless times before various House committees, Senate committees, the FDA, and the California State Legislature. I continue to monitor silicone issues and advocate for the silicone-afflicted as they move together through the legal system. I am routinely an expert source on the subject for print media and have been featured in stories by all three networks and many cable stations. I am a frequent guest on talk shows and have appeared on Good Morning America, CNN, Nightline, Larry King Live, Oprah, and many others. The NY Times, Wall Street Journal and other papers have published a number of my letters to the editor; my op-ed pieces have appeared in syndicated papers across the country. Over the years, stories profiling my continued activities have appeared in People magazine, USA Today and the LA Times, among others. I continue to be quoted widely in publications worldwide. I was awarded the California Consumer Activist of the Year and named by Los Angeles magazine as one of the “50 Most Interesting People in Los Angeles.” In 2005, the National Organization for Women honored me as one of their 2005 Woman of Action. Lifetime TV and Hearst Entertainment produced and aired Two Stories, a Movie of the Week about my personal experiences, the Command Trust Network and what was, at that time, the largest class action in the history of the United States. I was born in New York and am married to James S. Goldrich, MD, a retired obstetrician-gynecologist. We have two daughters and two grandchildren. I earned a BA from Hofstra College, an MA from New York University, and a Certificate from the Stanford University Publishing Program.
