Tricia Oakes

Tricia Oakes is a wanderlusting foodie Anglophile wife and mama who loves travel, tasting and experience. Here at Southern Spark you’ll find tips about meals and trips big and small. Sprinkles of stories about raising two Wee Frat Boys (ages five and two) in the burbs and being married to funniest man in the Carolinas are thrown in to taste (She may or may not steal his one-liners). All are delivered in a pot of Southern accent with a side of sassy mouth.

If Rick Steves and Anthony Bourdain had a daughter, raised her in Charlotte, educated her at the University of Georgia and the University of Texas at Austin, peppered it with a Junior Year abroad stint in England at the University of Reading, and then settled her down in Fort Mill, South Carolina, that daughter would be Tricia Oakes.

Trimming the fat

I’m fat.Not fat enough to be on The Biggest Loser, but I’m about forty pounds heavier than I would like to be.Most of it is leftover baby weight. Except my baby turned two in March. I can’t blame it on him anymore. I’ve also had my thyroid checked. It’s thankfully normal....more

Freshmen fifteen

Dear College Freshmen:Welcome to college life. If you didn't already learn all of these things in high school (you should have, but if you were terribly sheltered, I'm here for you.), I've compiled a list of guidelines you might find helpful.1. You will never be this young and beautiful again. Be sure to take full advantage of that and don't let the Mean Voice in your head tell you any different....more

Insane in the membrane. Insane in the brain.

Some days I think to myself, “I have so got this whole being sane thing.”Other days, The Committee that resides in my head tells me otherwise. The Cheerleader, the Child, the Naysayer, the Nymph and the Bulldog are all self-appointed members.  I’ve realized they aren’t going anywhere, so I have given them permission to decorate their areas of my head to their liking....more

Born at the Right Time

I don’t know how many times I’ve wished harm to come to one of my sisters.Whether it was because my baby sister cut off my Barbies’ hair down to their rubber scalps (I had long outgrown the toys, but still. They were mine, and now they are massacred.); or the middle sister who stole my clothes and lent them out to her friends when we were in high school. (That is my Paul Simon Born At The Right Time Tour t-shirt, you silly hippy poser, and if I see you wearing it, I will rip it off of your patchouli-scented back.)...more

Why I still use Foursquare

Foursquare, some people think you are so over. When I read Jim Mitchem’s manifesto on why he no longer uses Foursquare, I nodded my head and understood. I agreed, even. But there’s a difference between Jim and me. I have some Foursquare ”friends” who used to be my actual real life friends. We checked in a lot together. It was fun, in a juvenile way. It was about the camaraderie, not the badges....more
