I am like the Karate Kid, but older. And fatter. And with kids... Well you get the point...

     No but really, I am an unemployed, overweight, thirty-something wife with two kids who has decided to set the goal of earning a black belt in tae kwon do, along-side my eight (going on twenty-nine) year old son. I am a serial quitter. I also may be the clumsiest person on earth. This "getting my black belt" thing is going to be hard. And probably really, really funny.

Well, That Did Nothing For My Self-Esteem...

I am going through a transition. When people go through a life transition (new job, new baby, new spouse, etc...) there are other things in life that suffer. They have to because of all the time and concentration it takes while you find your new "normal." It happens to everyone. I, too, am going through a transition. I got a job. I knew it meant things that I felt were slightly less important would have to suffer. I guess I underestimated just how much it would suffer. Suck It Up, Cupcake

Yep, you read that right... suck it up, cupcake. It has become my favorite phrase, and I use it unilaterally. But my kid gets the brunt of it. I have unapologetically stole it from a mom whose son is a black belt at 5280 Karate Academy (Thanks, Stacie!). Her son was having a rough day at karate and with all the compassion and love she has for her child, told him to, "Suck it up, Cupcake." And he did. It was a beautiful moment in parenting. ...more
