Day One of BlogHer 2011: Bloggers, Food and Vibrators

I know it’s going to be a good conference when the first table I find at the expo is covered in sex toys.  I know it’s going to be a GREAT conference when, a half hour later, I am going through the swag bag from said sex toy company and discover they actually provided two vibrators!...more
A great run-down of Blogher 2011! Man, you really sold it to me. I want to go next year now! ...more

Early Intervention and Best Practices for Autism Awareness

I want to tell you a secret about Autism Awareness Month. I'm telling you because you have a stake in the autism community -- whether you touch one or many lives, you can change them, you are powerful. And, like me, you care. You want to make a difference -- for yourself, for your child, for someone you love, for someone who depends on you. And you can make a difference, you will, if you keep this cornerstone of Autism Awareness in mind at all times. Ready? Here it is: Behavior is communication. That's it. That's all. That's everything. ...more

Grey's Anatomy...The #*@$%^ Musical?!

Look.  I've been a pretty loyal Grey's Anatomy fan since the beginning.   And I'm the first to admit that it's not the show it was in those early days of Meredith and Derek rolling around on the living room floor.  But if Grey and Co. were still on the proper side of the shark pond?   I think it's maybe safe to say that they went ahead and took that epic leap. I'm saying in no uncertain terms here the show has jumped the shark. ...more

Open Season on Abortion Providers in South Dakota (and on Women Everywhere)

Grab your weapons and camo, abortion foes, because it is hunting season in South Dakota. I found out about it through Facebook. My (generally non-political) friend's status read, "Have we gone COMPLETELY insane?" and she linked to a Mother Jones story about a bill under consideration in South Dakota that would re-define the murder of abortion providers as "justifiable homicide." ...more

Warning: Television Is About To Get Worse

It is actually possible for television to fall further into it's dark abyss. I had to share this interesting post I found on Los Angeles' Craigslist.org about "Mom's Club", a great new show about 'Amazing Moms' currently in production. **********************************  "Mom's Club" casting posted on Craigslist 1-3-11....more

Hi Heather,

I'm going to argue that this Mom's Club show sounds like it could be unique, as I ...more

Who Cares if Abortion Is Legal if It Is Inaccessible?

My anti-choice friends in Kansas (bloody, bloody Kansas...) are proposing all sorts of exciting new restrictions on abortion, according to The Huffington Post, supposedly to discourage any doctor from performing second trimester abortions. Nearby, (as I mentioned last week) Nebraska introduced legislation to ban dispensing RU-486 via telemedicine, a common way to bring health care to rural areas. So one state doesn't want women to have early, non-surgical abortion access and the other doesn't want them to have access to legal abortions later. I see. ...more

Great post. I was not aware of this inaccessibility as it appears to get no media attention, so ...more

Social Media Is a Warm Gun: A Dangerous Tweet About Depression

The scary thing about social media is it has a nasty habit of allowing some dude who Googled stuff that one time and thought about some things and then decided maybe it would be fun to share them with his MySpace friends (I'm loosely paraphrasing, but seriously, only loosely) appear to be an expert of some kind. ...more

A Primer on Journaling

Originally, I assumed journaling was about writing very lofty thoughts in beautifully bound journals every single day, for the purposes of baring one's darkest and most emotionally-wrenching secrets from the depths of one's soul for all posterity. You know, like Anne Frank, except more profound. ...more
