Word Nerd

The tagline on my blog reads: “I’m kinda nerdy, happily wordy, and bookishly dorkalicious.” Beyond that, I’m a long-married mother of grown kids who are now married and making the most brilliant and beautiful children of their own.

Politically, I like to say that while my feet are planted firmly in the middle, I lean way left. I tend to think in terms of world over country and we over me. I’m a suburbanite working my way toward a life in the country, and I have nagging addictions to both chocolate and cheeseburgers. I’ve made friends with my wild curls, love my gray, and smile at the emerging wrinkles. Life is good.

How Do You Feel About Music on Blogs?

Music on blogs -- you either love it or hate it. As A Rural Journal notes, people feel strongly about whether or not to use an autoload music player on your blog. Some people see music as a form of self-expression that tells the reader about the author just as much as the design or the content. But others dive for the mute button on their computer whenever they click over to a blog and hear the opening notes of Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On." ...more

She Called Me "Kitten": Remembering Cosmo Editor Helen Gurley Brown

It seemed like Helen Gurley Brown, the famed magazine editor who turned Cosmopolitan into the raciest!, the daringest!, the most fabulously pro-woman/pro-men, pro-men-chasing-women-and-women-chasing-men magazine ever! had figured out how to be ageless, kittenish and fabulous forever. But, alas, time finally won out against the impossibly dynamic Helen, and she passed away today at the ripe young age of 90....more

Can I Be That Mom? Saying No to Chick-Fil-A and Boy Scouts

My children -- while they definitely won’t have the problem of having restricted cartoon viewing or lack of alcohol exposure may, despite my best efforts, still come out of childhood feeling slighted. It’s hard to explain to your eight-year-old why you won’t match her in wearing her Susan B. Komen regalia when she thinks it’s so cool. To your ten year old why you don’t want him to be a Scout. To either of them why chicken nuggets and waffle fries have to be passed over....more
